DIGITALEUROPE as a European Equivalent of India's NASSCOM

As we know, India's Nasscom, a not-for-profit industry association, has been the apex body for the $245 billion technology industry in India. Since the day of its establishment in 1988, the organization has been supporting the industry that is making a phenomenal contribution to India's GDP, exports, employment, infrastructure and global visibility. In India, this industry provides the highest employment in the private sector.

Nasscom is focused on building the architecture of the technology sector; its 3000+ members constitute 90% of the industry’s revenue and have enabled the association to spearhead initiatives at local, national and global levels.

In Europe, a leading trade association representing the digital technology industry that could be considered an equivalent of Nasscom is called DIGITALEUROPE . The organization represents over 45,000 businesses, including major global tech players and European SMEs, that are shaping the continent's digital economy.

Its vision statement says: "We strive for a Europe leading on digital for its people, its businesses, and the climate."

DIGITALEUROPE sees its mission in engaging with policymakers and citizens to shape a more secure and competitive business environment for a stronger digital Europe. It plays significant role in shaping the industry policy positions on all relevant legislative matters and contributes to the development and implementation of relevant EU policies. Among the member businesses operating and investing in Europe, there are 109 corporations which are global leaders in their field of activity, as well as 41 national trade associations from across Europe.

Brief Introduction to DIGITALEUROPE:

  • Purpose and Focus: Like Nasscom, DIGITALEUROPE works to influence policies that drive innovation and economic growth within the tech sector. It engages with EU policymakers, advocating for regulations and policies that support digital transformation, competitiveness, and sustainability.
  • Key Areas: DIGITALEUROPE covers a wide range of areas, including artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, data governance, cybersecurity, and skills development. It plays a vital role in setting the strategic direction for Europe’s technology industry, working closely with the European Commission and national governments to create a conducive environment for tech businesses.
  • Membership: DIGITALEUROPE's members include both large multinational corporations (like Microsoft, Google, and Nokia) and national tech associations from across Europe. This makes it an influential body for promoting the digital industry's interests at the EU level.
  • Impact: Similar to how Nasscom has helped India become a global tech hub, DIGITALEUROPE aims to ensure Europe’s leadership in digital technologies by fostering collaboration, innovation, and digital skill development across the continent.

All in all, DIGITALEUROPE plays a crucial role in shaping the digital landscape of Europe and could be seen as a European counterpart to Nasscom in terms of industry representation, policy advocacy, and enabling growth in the tech sector.
