Digital Twins Crafting the Future of Data Centres: Insight From the Experts

Digital twins are virtual replicas of physical assets that can be used to monitor and simulate real-time performance.?

This digital twin technology has gone from a futuristic ideal to a present-day reality for data centre developers and operators. This highly specialised virtual modelling can impact the entire data centre lifecycle, beginning with site due diligence and moving into design and construction, as well as measuring sustainability objectives and creating tools for operational excellence.?

By creating a digital twin of a data centre, operators can identify potential issues before they occur and optimise day-to-day operating and maintenance practices to boost reliability and efficiency.

“And it means you're not waiting for architects and engineers to come back and redraft; you can make a lot of those changes on the fly using that digital model of a digital twin,” says Greg Zalewski, PMP, ATD, DCEP , Preconstruction Manager at Black & Veatch .

“It doesn't have to be a fully developed model – you can do some very rough block models and get an idea of how it will all work. From there you can visualise what that project will look like and what your facility will be, before you ever put a shovel in the ground.”

Other benefits of digital twin technology for data centres include:?

  • Accurate testing and refinement of sustainability and efficiency initiatives, including immediate, short and long-term planning?
  • Holistic review of data centres with integrated digital twin technology possible?
  • Eliminates geographical barriers in initial site due diligence and design phases.?Enabling seamless and virtual collaboration with multiple stakeholders in real-time?
  • Replaces the need for subsequent contractors having to make allowances around the first to start work. “They know exactly down to the inch where they need to be and how close they should be from one system to the next, and this saves a lot of time in the field,” says Greg Zalewski, PMP, ATD, DCEP .?
  • Saving on time, money and resources and reduces waste?

With these benefits alone, it’s clear to see why data centre operators are taking an interest in digital twins.

“2D plans and drawings are not enough for clients anymore,"

says the Black & Veatch team, with clients instead calling for 3D and digital twin models.

Digital Twin Technology for Data Centres: Experts at Black & Veatch?Provides the Answers

With over 40 years experience working on data centres and a growing portfolio of 120+ projects, we turned to the experts at Black & Veatch for a report on #digitaltwins.

In the digital report, experts Shilpa Maganti, P.E., Greg Zalewski, PMP, ATD, DCEP, Angie Nygren, Drew Derrick and amol samant highlight the benefits the technology has for data centres, with reference to several case studies.?

Read the report.

“Digital twins mean clients can design twice, but build once.”
“Our clients are feeling accountable for sustainability and making sure they have sustainable options in their designs.”

Potential outcomes of using digital twins were outlined in the report, including:

  1. Real-time monitoring: Digital twins can provide a virtual replica of the data centre, enabling real-time monitoring of operations and performance metrics.
  2. Predictive maintenance: By using digital twins, data centre operators can simulate various scenarios and identify potential issues before they occur. This can enable predictive maintenance, reducing downtime and improving overall efficiency.
  3. Energy efficiency: Digital twins can help optimise energy usage by simulating different configurations and identifying areas where energy can be conserved.
  4. Cost savings: By optimising operations and reducing downtime, data centre operators can save on operational costs and improve the overall bottom line.
  5. Improved scalability: Digital twins can help data centre operators simulate different scenarios and test new configurations, enabling more efficient scaling and expansion of operations.

Conclusion: Digital Twin Tech a No-Brainer for the Data Centre Industry

Overall, the use of digital twins can provide significant benefits for data centre operations, including improved efficiency, reduced downtime, and cost savings.

And, as digital twin technology becomes the industry standard, data centre owners and operators will benefit from more reliable, efficient and sustainable facilities.?

Digital models presented in 3D, 4D and 5D will impact not only site due diligence and design, but also construction, budgeting, modernisation and operations. Modelling catches issues long before they become problems and specialist companies such as Black & Veatch go further to ensure clients can assess the smallest details.?

Digital Twin technology solutions include:?

“Prior to committing to steps that were recommended to us, we wanted to see them first in a simulated environment. We have taken steps to start planning IT migrations and some other technology related initiatives—like tech refreshes of equipment and high-density deployments—with simulation. We want to see how changes are going to perform first, so simulation has been the way for us to do that,” said Christian Pastrana, PE , VP of DC Planning at 花旗 , when talking about digital twin technology and The #6Sigma Digital Twin by Future Facilities.?

?“It’s very difficult to manually inspect every element of a data centre to identify inefficiencies and make improvements. EkkoSoft Critical provides us with a highly granular level of data and visualisation to help support our green agenda - and ensure our customers meet their sustainability targets. We’ve already made significant carbon emission reductions,” said Paul Lewis , Senior Operations Director at Telehouse Europe , when talking about #EkkoSoft Critical by EkkoSense.?
