Digital Twin Technology
A digital twin is a virtual model designed to accurately reflect a physical object. The object being studied for example, a wind turbine is outfitted with various sensors related to vital areas of functionality. These sensors produce data about different aspects of the physical object’s performance, such as energy output, temperature, weather conditions and more. This data is then relayed to a processing system and applied to the digital copy.?
Once informed with such data, the virtual model can be used to run simulations, study performance issues and generate possible improvements, all with the goal of generating valuable insights which can then be applied back to the original physical object.
A digital twin works by digitally replicating a physical asset in the virtual environment, including its functionality, features, and behavior. A real-time digital representation of the asset is created using smart sensors that collect data from the product. You can use the representation across the lifecycle of an asset, from initial product testing to real-world operating and decommissioning.
The digital twin is an exciting concept and undoubtedly one of the hottest tech trends right now. It fuses ideas including artificial intelligence (AI), the internet of things (IoT), metaverse, and virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) to create digital models of real-world objects, systems, or processes. These models can then be used to tweak and adjust variables to study the effect on whatever is being twinned at a fraction of the cost of carrying out experiments in the real world.
