Digital Twin Capabilities Periodic Table: The Geospatial Perspective

I have always found the Digital Twin Capabilities Periodic Table (CPT) to be the most reliable reference when it comes to this area of discussion, but I didn't notice before that there is no (explicit) mention of the spatial aspect until I read about it in Marc Goldman 's post!?

I believe I didn't notice, as my mind automatically knew that the GIS was there (implicitly).

The article from Motivf by Daniel Feinberg had a very concise description of why "location" is important to create a digital twin. I cannot imagine creating a new structure without taking into consideration the surrounding conditions! I liked how the article described how location capability can be included in the current CPT.

Meanwhile, the Digital Twin Consortium divides digital twin capabilities into six categories. Here is how I saw the geospatial capability in the capabilities table all this time:

  1. Data Services: GIS technologies can help in managing and analyzing geospatial data within the digital twin context. It can facilitate the integration of spatial data from various sources, such as satellite imagery, aerial photography, or geospatial databases, into the digital twin platform.
  2. Integration: GIS enables communication and integration with external enterprise systems and applications, facilitating the incorporation of geospatial data into the digital twin environment, which provides a holistic view of the digital twin's context.
  3. Intelligence: GIS provides tools for spatial analytics, geospatial modeling, and AI integration, enhancing the development and deployment of analytical models within the digital twin solution.
  4. UX (User Experience): GIS technologies offer visualization and interaction capabilities that can provide map-based interfaces, allowing users to visualize the spatial and geographic relationships between entities with the digital twin.
  5. Management System and Ecosystem Management: As mentioned in Motivf's article, GIS has the capability to define and enforce geographic-based rules within a business context. For instance, a business rule can be established to trigger a specific action when an entity is in close geographic proximity to another entity.
  6. Trustworthiness: GIS ensures the security, privacy, safety, reliability, and resilience of geospatial data and processes within the digital twin, including data encryption, access control, and disaster recovery planning.

In the end, I want to highlight that the specific ways in which GIS and geospatial technologies are utilized within digital twin environments can vary depending on the specific application domain, industry, and implementation approach.

Interesting extension, thanks. And for reference for those not familiar with the DTC Periodic Table resources: https://www.digitaltwinconsortium.org/initiatives/capabilities-periodic-table/

Awesome post Hesham Gamal Gaafar. Location should be the seventh category!

Thank you for the consideration of my ideas, and for the reference. I am excited to see this discussion growing quickly - there is an opportunity to leverage the Digital Twin Consortium's reference architecture and capabilities frameworks to more effectively communicate the importance, and business value, of space, geography, and location intelligence for digital twins. I will be posting on this topic again soon, and am excited to continue this discussion and to work together to better infuse and align GIS and location intelligence into the digital twin culture and capabilities.
