The progressive shift from analog to an all things digital system of operations is considered to be one of the more defining hallmarks of 21st-century industrialization and ‘technovation.’ Virtually every analog device, from CRT TVs to clocks, to car systems, etc. now has a digitally derived variant.
In the automobile and aviation industries digitally based operating systems are defacto standards and their adoption has, for the most part, translated to higher efficacy and improved operational efficiency. Likewise for every other field where the digitalization sandstorm is taking a sweep.
This foundational trait of increased productivity associated with the incorporation of digital technologies is the basic premise of digital transformation.
Basically, digital transformation is the manipulation of digital-based technologies to grant heightened operational efficiency and scalability to otherwise traditional business and technological processes.
In prospering operational efficiency digital transformation recalibrates all segments of an organizational framework into providing new and improved value to all concerned stakeholders. Note that the whole premise of digital transformation is hinged on digital technologies. By providing an operational edge to overcoming barriers that limit operational efficiency, digital technologies set the tone for a transformative process that cultivates added value for every party implicated in the functioning of an organization.
That being said, in the IT sector (and in virtually every other field of endeavor) the operational boost prospered by digital technologies must be matched by a correspondent shift in the corporate cultural environment for digital transformation to thrive. This is because much like traditional factors of production, digital technologies must be manipulated and exploited by human effort before they can propagate digital transformation.
