Let's talk about Digital Transformation and why the traditional approach of AEC & D&M firms – delivering projects on time and within budget (and on paper) – is no longer sufficient in today's dynamic marketplace. Owners and designers are demanding a more strategic partnership, one that demonstrably links projects to their overarching business objectives. This shift necessitates a focus on business outcomes, a data-driven approach that ensures projects not only meet specifications but actively contribute to a client's long-term success.
Digital Transformation: The Catalyst for Business Outcomes
Digital transformation is no longer optional; it's the engine propelling AEC & D&M firms towards achieving business outcomes. By strategically integrating technologies like Building Information Modeling (BIM), digital factories, cloud collaboration platforms, and advanced data analytics, AEC & D&M firms can unlock significant benefits:
These improvements directly translate into tangible business outcomes that resonate with both AEC & D&M firms and their clients:
None of this is possible if you're stuck pushing paper around the office in an effort to collaborate.
Digital Natives to the Rescue!
In my last article, I talked about Generation Z, also known as "digital natives." Gen Z'ers don't know a work environment dominated by paper processes, landline phones, and disconnected data. They grew up fully immersed in digital tech from day one; that means they're comfortable with the internet, cloud platforms, remote work environments, and virtual reality. So let them help you achieve your digital transformation goals. You don't need to hire a "specialty contractor". And Gen Z will soon make up 30% of the workforce so whether you like it or not, digital transformation is inevitable. It's better to get out in front of your competition now rather than play catch up later on.

The Cost of Inaction: The Status Quo Trap
While digital transformation can seem like a significant undertaking, the cost of inaction is far steeper. Take Southwest Airlines for example. In December 2022 a combination of sever winter weather conditions and outdated technology led to the cancellation of 1000's of Southwest flights and stranded more than 2 million travelers over the holidays. As a result, Southwest airlines estimates they lost $1.1 Billion in refunds, reimbursements, extra costs and lost ticket sales. And that's BEFORE being slapped with a $140 Million fine by the United States Department of Transportation. Throw in the incalculable cost of a tarnished reputation, poor customer experience, and lost future customers and the cost is even greater. All of this was a result of having a "business as usual" mindset, which will cost Southwest an additional estimated $1 billion to upgrade and maintain.
So, the bottom line is that will cost Southwest Airlines well over $2 Billion in customer compensation, fines, and system upgrades. All because of a "this is fine", "this is the way we've always done things" attitude.
Embrace Change, Achieve Success, and Do It NOW!
The allure of the "perfect time" can be a seductive trap. We often wait for that magical moment when everything aligns to begin something new, but the truth is, it never arrives. The best time to begin your journey of digital transformation is right now. Every moment you wait is a chance for someone else, hungrier and less hesitant, to take the leap. They'll snag the innovative ideas, build the customer base, and establish themselves as the leader in the field. By the time you decide to finally act, you'll be playing catch-up, forever chasing the shadow of those who were bold enough to start when the time was right – which, paradoxically, was always the present.
