Digital Transformation - The Human Touch

Digital Transformation - The Human Touch

Why is our "Soft Skills" becoming invaluable as we fully embrace the 4th revolution? Having spent over ten years discussing the challenges of ramping up digital use within the workplace and HR/HCM functions, in particular.  I've found it is a common misconception that the transformation is about IT, systems and processes.

However, what I have since learned (I was guilty of the same view as many) is that effective digital transformation commences with the human journey. I have been extremely fortunate to support many of my Vendor/Clients who are pushing the boundaries within R & D to produce best practice Learning Technology. It is a fast-past competitive market, but in all cases, it is around the "learner experience/journey" recognising where we need/want to be and what are the stages to get us there. The systems are only a means of leveraging the stages, evaluating progress, and suggesting new and more effective paths to get there.

In a recent research report by Skillsoft, I was delighted to see that post Covid they have indeed recognised that the human “soft skills” are in fact our greatest advantage and are our "power skills" to improve effectiveness.

Top 10 course undertaken in 2020:

#1 BECOME A GREAT LISTENER  #2 COMMUNICATING WITH CONFIDENCE  #3 TRUST BUILDING THROUGH EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION  #4 THE ART AND SCIENCE OF COMMUNICATION BUSINESS SKILLS  #5 MAKING AN IMPACT WITH NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION  #6 CONTRIBUTING AS A VIRTUAL TEAM MEMBER  #7 MICROSOFT TEAMS: COMMUNICATING VIA THE APP  #8 CHOOSING THE RIGHT INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION  #9 MAXIMIZE YOUR PRODUCTIVITY BY MANAGING TIME AND TASKS  #10 DO WE HAVE A FAILURE TO COMMUNICATE?

In summary then, to navigate 'successful' digital transformation, you must implement a humancentric approach, digital – like anything else in a vacuum won’t work on its own.

The title of your article sums it up Jill: We all need to focus on the skills that make us great human beings; whether we are in or out of work. Thanks for highlighting this.

Jill, we have found that the most popular sessions on our internal leadership development programme relate to: the emotionally intelligent leader, the leader as a coach, and the engaging leader....which aligns to your post. Hope all is well with you!

Hi Jill I'm not comfortable with the term "soft skills", these are hard skills to master and require lots of practice. These are the skills I learned in my sales training over many years.
