Is Digital Transformation a Business or IT Initiative?

There's a common misconception that digital transformation is an IT project. In reality, for it to work, it needs to be approached as a business initiative. So, what does that really mean? Let’s simplify it.

The big question is: How do you make digital transformation about the business, not just IT?

?

From my experience as a recruiter, I’ve hired for projects where immediate and urgent transformation was the goal, but after checking on them recently, they’re still stuck in the early stages. Here’s what I’ve learned—digital transformation isn’t just about technology; it’s about reshaping the business and changing the way the company thinks:

?

  1. Start with Leadership: Who’s in Charge? It all begins at the top. If the project is led by IT, it will likely remain a technical project. To drive real business change, leaders from the business side need to be involved. They’ll focus on the big picture—how the project will help the company grow, not just upgrade its systems.

?

  1. Build a Team Focused on Business Needs It’s not just about IT. Your core team should include more people from the business side, as they understand what’s working and what needs fixing in daily operations. Their input will make sure the project improves how the business runs, not just how technology works.

?

  1. Focus on Business Processes First, Not Technology Before diving into new tech, think about your business processes. What do you want to improve? Once you have that in mind, choose technology that supports those changes. If you let the technology lead, you might miss out on real opportunities to enhance your business.

?

  1. People and Change Matter Introducing new technology doesn’t automatically change how people work. It’s essential to help your team understand how the new way of doing things will make their work better. This kind of support will make sure they actually use the new tools and processes.

?

  1. Measure Business Value, Not Just Tech Upgrades A common mistake is implementing new technology just because the old one is outdated. Instead, ask: what improvements will this bring to the business? Make sure the project is driven by the value it adds to the company, not just the need for new software.

?

By focusing on business goals, processes, and people, you’ll ensure your digital transformation delivers real results. It’s not just about updating technology—it’s about evolving your business for the future.

Well said, Anmol. Transformation starts with discovery and assessment, aligning with organizational goals and objectives. The outcome may involve process standardization, technology adoption, followed by organizational change management and user adoption.

Thanks for sharing, Anmol Singh! You raise an important point. I completely agree that digital transformation should be viewed as a business initiative, not just an IT project. It's crucial for leadership to take the reins and ensure that the focus remains on business needs and processes. Prioritizing people and creating a culture that embraces change will ultimately drive success.
