Digital Things: What is the cloud and is there a silver lining for unifying data??

Have you heard of the first hard disk, IBM RAMAC 305, originally released in 1956? The model stored about 5 MB of data and took an entire room to operate. Quite in contrast to storage disks today, which store terabytes of data on a small device, and at a fraction of cost. We have made significant progress in the data storage methods, and the newer one, albeit not the latest, is the cloud.??

While the name is often a cause of confusion, the concept is as simple as anything. The Cloud is simply a metaphor for the Internet. It refers to software and services that run on the Internet, instead of locally on your computer. The Cloud stores data in multiple, connected locations, and lets you access your information on any device with an Internet connection.??

A few simple examples — the videos you stream, emails you access, files you store, and software you use such as service line inventory management software, all leverage the cloud. Easy, isn’t it? It certainly was for Newark, NJ as part of unifying their data throughout the lifecycle of their lead service line program.??

Watch the video to understand the basics of cloud. Also watch more episodes of our Digital Things series to explore all things digital. We will see you the next time!?
