Digital Things: The Connection Between Machine Learning, Cats and Dogs, and Lead Pipes
Welcome to the second episode of Digital Things with Trinnex! In this episode, Steven Drangsholt speaks about the technology that has been creating a buzz in various industries — machine learning.
Machine learning has been around for a while, but confusion persists around the way it works.
Machine learning, simply put, trains a machine to learn from the data fed into a machine learning model. This model looks for patterns in provided data and tries to predict outcomes. The more data, the more accurate the outcomes. Just like how humans learn.
It has helped several industries such as finance, healthcare, and retail to take strides toward fraud detection, diagnosis, pattern recognition, and so on. So, do we see the scope of its use in the public service industry as well? The answer is, absolutely!
Machine learning can help find patterns in lead service line data to predict the likelihood of lead in our communities' pipelines. These models use tens of features to find patterns that most humans can't articulate. Data scientists make sense of the patterns and train/test these to ensure the outcome is reliable.
Watch the video to understand the basics of machine learning, and why cats, dogs, and horses might help with the concept. You can also learn more about how we use machine learning for service line inventory development. Don’t forget to watch the first episode of Digital Things to know what you can expect from this biweekly series.
