Picture the UK’s towns and cities characterised not by crawling traffic and rising pollution, but by the smooth flow of humming electric vehicles, some driving themselves, safely sharing space with scooters, cyclists and pedestrians.?
Although difficult to imagine, this future may be within closer reach than you think. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) , in January 2024, there were one million battery-electric vehicles on the roads in Britain. The UK is also close to passing the Automated Vehicles Bill into law, setting the foundation for a world-leading regulatory framework to support the deployment of self-driving vehicles.?
However, the evolution of transport goes beyond the vehicle itself. Picture AI-infused traffic management systems meticulously choreographing traffic flows, mitigating congestion, and optimising efficiency. On public transport, “smart stations” will use AI enabled cameras to spot behaviours that help staff respond to incidents on the ground quicker.?
This rapid innovation is being driven, in part, by the urgent need to decarbonise our transport system. It remains one of the most polluting sectors in the UK, with surface transport responsible for around 25% of total carbon emissions. The Sixth Carbon Budget (2033-2037) is the first to contain the UK’s share of emissions from international aviation and shipping. Meeting this budget and achieving net-zero by 2050 is a national imperative, as is the need to adapt to the already irreversible impact of climate change.?
Government, industry, and innovators must work in partnership to drive change forward. We need sound policy frameworks and industrial strategies that incentivise the adoption of sustainable transport solutions and the technology that underpins them. This must be supported by investments in critical infrastructure, research and development.?
These are the issues that form the basis of techUK’s Mobilise: The Future of Infrastructure conference on 17 April 2024. We will delve into how we can get transport’s digital transformation right, the challenges to overcome, and ways to drive partnerships across the public and private sectors.?
