This digital revolution has a long way to go!!!
Every day I see fascinating evidence of the digital world ‘colliding’ with the physical world and producing new business models. It could be Augmented Reality 3D footage helping a Mechanic service a machine more efficiently - or the arrival of yet a new service like Uber Eats, or my streaming music connected to my new French Devialet speaker!
Flashback to the mid-90s when Morgan & Banks was presenting a new concept to analysts - a digital medium called a website where people could upload their resume... out of nowhere an audience member interjected ‘I’m not putting my resume online, there are serial killers out there on the internet!”
My response was something along the lines of, “Well, yes, but I believe that serial killers have existed long before the web.”
The underlying message is that when these two worlds do collide, it sparks many reactions, many positive but also negative ones - like Uber’s impact on the Taxi industry who in many locations paid high prices for their taxi licence plates.
So we are in unchartered waters and not all of this revolution will be well received....but its unstoppable and every physical object and service offered in the real world, if not already impacted by the digital world and technology - will be sooner or later.
That spells huge untapped opportunity for all those entrepreneurs out there yet to realise their dream- my view is we are barely 20% of our way on this new wave of innovation - but be ready for the push back and the flack... as the human race loves and fears change all at the same time!

5 年Thanks Andrew this is so true. A growth mindset is key - success in an era of disruption is about rising above our need for certainty and allowing ourselves to sit with the discomfort of uncertainty. Maybe we’ll succeed and maybe we won’t! This is tough as our brains are wired to crave certainty and control - our primitive survival instinct. As you say humans don’t like change. A helpful alternative is to focus on purposeful effort. Outcome in an age of disruption might be somewhat out of our control but purpose and value driven action is in our control!

6 年M&B is a good memory Andrew. I will never forget some of the training you and Geoff gave to me back in 1986. You deserve the success you have obviously had.
