Digital recruitment platforms: friend or foe?

Hiring platforms online are really starting to bite into the recruitment market. Maybe it is the ease of access for hiring companies, perhaps it is the familiarity of doing things online or maybe it is just another manifestation of the on-demand culture we live in.

Either way, recruiters ask me all the time if they are a threat, or an opportunity, a friend or a foe. My answer?

Current status: Foe. Potential Status: Friend (and a game changer at that).

As recruiters in a rapidly changing industry, we have to reassess what our strengths are, and formulate new ways to leverage those strengths against the competition. In the case of the Recruitment Agency, their strengths are obvious;

The ability to do one thing and one thing well; identify and manage the best, available candidates.

Tech companies that build platforms cannot compete with this. Agencies are the best in the world at identifying, and managing large networks of candidates, which is why Agencies exist, and in my opinion always will.

See, Agencies don't exist because Hiring Companies cannot hire themselves, they exist because they cannot hire themselves fast enough, to ever beat those Hiring Companies that are using Agencies.

Forty years ago, the recruitment agency was the only party that could tell you who is good, and who is available - today, that could not be further from the truth. Internal recruiters, more agency recruiters than ever and tech platforms have the same information. So while you have this data, why not create your own platform to monetise it, before someone else does?

And so, tech platforms may well have a lovely dashboard, and pleasant User Interface, and look nice, and easy to use, but if they cannot source the quantity and the quality of talent, then they are stuffed. And recruitment agencies are in a position to stuff them. With our help.
