Good reads
It’s been an active month for literature on quality measurement and improvement. Here’s a selection of the best reads for busy quality leaders:
Digital Quality
First, take a look at this great blog by Becky Kolinski at NCQA. It perfectly lays out the three major categories that Health Plans need to focus on as they put together their digital quality transition plans: clinical data, mapping to FHIR, and creating the right infrastructure.
Now to make your head really spin, have a look at this publication from the team at UC San Diego that shows the potential of LLMs to categorize measure compliance using FHIR data. While this is a single, small study, the results are intriguing. What if we didn’t need measure logic at all?
Measures of Interest
This publication by Qaseem et al for the Performance Measurement Committee of the American College of Physicians investigates existing quality indicators for pain management in adults. It’s an important target for quality measurement. As national efforts to decrease opioid use begin to see success, we must also be mindful of the potential consequences for those with chronic and debilitating pain. Better quality indicators of pain are an important foundation for better pain management.
Big Picture
Mirror, Mirror 2024: A portrait of the Failing US Health System from the Commonwealth Fund paints a troubling picture of the US health system in comparison to other countries, based on five categories: access to care, care process, administrative efficiency, equity and health outcomes. It’s also an excellent primer for organizational leadership on the critical role of healthcare quality, including the financial consequences of poor healthcare quality as expressed by increased healthcare spending.
