Digital Product Access: The User Experience Problem of Our Time

Logging in (and staying logged in) is a headache everyone experiences. Often people must jump through hurdles—password recovery and two-factor authentication, to name a few—to access a digital product. Something so essential and common should be simple, but it's not.

Why Digital Product Access is an Issue

Before we can solve the problem, we need to understand why it’s difficult to begin with.

  • Digital Tools and Passwords Are Out of Control: Nearly every site or app requires a username and password. Everyone has zillions of accounts—it's becoming almost impossible to keep track of all the credentials we have.
  • Humans Have Faulty Memories: We all forget passwords. We have far too many to remember, and we lose them often. So, we’re perpetually in a cycle of trying to recover passwords (annoying) or using the same password for everything (which isn’t secure).
  • The Experience Isn’t a Priority: Development-centered teams don’t put much thought into the access experience. They view it as a perfunctory problem that can be fixed with training or help.

Don’t Accept the Status Quo

Until major advancements in digital security happen, there will always be hurdles we must jump through. But frustrating, anger-inducing log-in issues don’t need to last forever. Now that we understand why digital access is such a massive problem, product development teams can start addressing it. Even with the constraints imposed on them, the process can be easier and user pains can be reduced.
