This week, Naspers launched a pioneering report into the untapped value that digital platforms could create for South Africa’s economy.
The research was done in partnership with the independent think-tank, Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA), and found that more collective effort into building strong digital platforms, including e-tail, fintech, e-hailing, and classifieds, could lift the country’s GDP twentyfold!
That's a potential increase of $5.2 billion by 2035. Not only that, but the increase in labor demand could create as many as 340,000 jobs!?
The research found that to fully realize its potential, South Africa needs more affordable, faster, and widely accessible digital infrastructure; a reduction in the regulatory burden on early-stage platform businesses; an increase in the number of science, technology, engineering, and math graduates; improved economic inclusion and social protection; and collective action from all stakeholders.
If these five key findings are addressed, South Africa can achieve the growth it deserves! To do this, we need collective action from business, government, and civil society.
Prosus and Naspers are committed to continuing to play their part. Together, let us shape the global digital future.?
