A positive onboarding experience is key on an employee's work-life journey. Not just the onboarding to a new enterprise, but to a new role, position or project.
In the current situation with remote working, how to make it successfully onsite? Using digital tools but still making it personal and meaningful? Here are 6 key elements of success and some digital tools that may be helpful:
1. Get close; have a one to one chat to ensure individual worries and inquiries are attended, make it personal. Tools: Google Meet, Microsoft Teams.
2. Set multiple "touch-points"; support the employee through all the process, not just one big intervention but having shorter multiple moments will make them feel accompanied.
3. Assign a culture ambassador; someone who will introduce the onboarding person to the team's or the organization's culture, "how things are done" around there. Especially now that the way of doing things may have changed. Tools: Microsoft Teams or Slack.
4. Get them familiarized with the digital tools being used currently and expected to be used in the near future. Get them skilled to avoid anxiety.
5. Avoid long and never-ending documents; make it useful, a positive experience,... make it fun! Take advantage of "gamification" for engaging participants. Tools: Genially for creating games. Canva or Powtoon for making more visually attractive presentations.
6. Give them access to key resources; ensuring access to the necessary resources, content and people will prevent frustration, positively contributing to a successful experience. Create the necessary "learning environment" to support the employee's high performance and agile development.
