Digital natives don't use email

The term "digital native" has become a buzzword to describe the younger generation that has grown up with technology at their fingertips. From smartphones to social media, these individuals are often considered tech-savvy and well-equipped for the modern workplace.

Recently, a Finnish tech news magazine wrote about how school teachers have noticed that students often lack a basic understanding of file management, spreadsheets, and email—skills considered rudimentary in most professional settings.

One of the causes, the experts say, is that kids use mobile phones and tablets, not "real" computers.

But is that a legitimate worry for their future employers?

Some people I’ve discussed with argue that the foundational skills of the future will, in any case, be different than what they’ve been for the last 50 years. Spreadsheets, email, and document-based file systems could become obsolete as we move toward an era dominated by AI and automation.

Anyway, I would not be too worried about the competence of digital natives. I'm sure those who want and need to can quickly get up to speed with any technology, old or new.

The reliance on manual search, reminiscent of the days of filing cabinets and Windows Explorer, is a vestige of the past. In today's tech-driven world, the need for structured searches to locate documents is nearly obsolete. In the interim, solutions like SharePoint have bridged the gap. Moreover, cutting-edge technologies, including AI-powered agents like ChatGPT and its various derivatives, are revolutionizing the way we access and extract information from documents. The present moment offers a golden opportunity for companies to invest in developing their own "Agents." These digital assistants not only streamline the process of locating documents but, more importantly, enable organizations to harvest their vast pools of corporate knowledge like never before.
