The APAC Mobile Economy report was launched at the GSMA’s Digital Nation Summit in Singapore, an event that brings together industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators to explore the critical role mobile technology has in driving economic growth and creating a more inclusive digital future for Asia Pacific. The summit agenda features insightful keynote addresses, panel discussions, and fireside chats with executives from leading companies like Singtel, Google, and Grab.

This year’s summit will also include The GSMA APAC Fintech Forum a new community programme to unite the connected fintech and commerce sectors with Asia Pacific’s mobile network operators. The vision of the forum is to accelerate innovation and integration of mobile networks to advance the mobile economy and nurture digital trust as the foundation for sustainable and inclusive digital nations in the region.

The Mobile Economy report also highlights the need for greater collaboration in this space. The report says that with the rise of cybercriminals targeting consumers and businesses, particularly in the area of online payments and financial services, it is crucial governments, mobile operators and other digital ecosystem players work together to build consumer trust and online safety.

The fintech forum builds on the GSMA Open Gateway initiative, launched in 2023 and supported by over 280 mobile operators worldwide, serving two thirds of the world’s mobile users. Recently launched online security and anti-fraud APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) are now starting to be used by banks and online retailers to mitigate identity fraud and transaction risks. Asia Pacific mobile operators have been particularly proactive in this area, with operators in Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam committing to launch more online security services.

The rise of ecommerce in the region has opened more avenues for digital fraud, significantly impacting consumers and businesses

Mr Tian Chong Ng , Chief Executive Officer, Singtel Singapore said, “The rise of ecommerce in the region has opened more avenues for digital fraud, significantly impacting consumers and businesses. Together with AIS and Maxis, we can combat this rising digital fraud and protect our customers more effectively. Tapping into our telco data and collective expertise, we will be able to seamlessly authenticate, protect and mitigate financial fraud so our customers across Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia can enjoy a safe digital lifestyle. We will continue to lead the charge against digital fraud and encourage more MNOs to come onboard to build a stronger defence for all.”

SingVerify will help mitigate the incidence of illegal account takeovers and unauthorised transactions that result from phishing and malware app scams. It also enables a smoother multi-factor authentication process as consumer’s digital identities are verified instantly and directly between the telco and service providers. The two APIs that will be first federated by AIS and Maxis include Number Verify, an application that validates customers’ identities by matching their phone numbers with their registered account details on the service provider’s platform and Device Location.

The federation works in accordance with the GSMA Open Gateway framework, a globally recognised initiative that is designed to provide universal access and ensure swift deployment and integration across different mobile networks, allowing more service providers and end users to benefit from the solution.

Julian Gorman Gorman, Head of Asia Pacific at the GSMA , said: “I’m delighted three of Asia’s most innovative mobile operators have come together, through the GSMA Open Gateway initiative, to tackle online fraud and help increase consumer trust in new digital services across Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. Fraudulent attacks can have a profound impact on victims, including financial losses and distress, resulting in a degradation of trust in digital platforms. Cybercriminals operate beyond national borders, so it’s vital that mobile operators and developers of digital services unify behind a common approach to fraud prevention wherever they are in the world.”
