Digital Literacy... the new Essential Skill

Digital Literacy... the new Essential Skill

In a bold mandate by Welsh Government, Wales is the first nation to take the momentous step in recognising how important it is for modern learners to be digitally capable by updating its essential skills qualification .

From September 2015, digital literacy will replace ICT as the third essential skill, sitting alongside traditional subjects such as English and maths.

Why are these qualifications important? As well as offering a firm grounding for young people to develop the skills they need for adult life, they are a compulsory element in any Apprenticeship or foundation learning programme. This means that anyone who wants to go on to higher level further education (FE) will have to engage with at least a basic level of essential skills.

For essential skills practitioners, digital literacy represents a completely new area of learning and teaching. ‘Training the trainers’ is a key task in bringing everyone up to speed for the new programme, that's why we at Educ8 have developed the digital literacy training course for practitioners who want to deliver the newly established qualification. The ‘Level 3 Certificate for Essential Skills Practitioners – Digital Literacy’ training course is designed to help trainers, tutors and assessors to better understand what digital literacy means in this context, and ensure they have the confidence, knowledge and experience to deliver it.

Hi Gash Bhullar, thanks for your comment! I completely agree- that's why we deliver a range of practical qualifications; ranging from Health and Social Care to Engineering. The Digital Literacy is just one component of the Apprenticeship framework, albeit a crucial one! Thanks!

Hi Karina, that's all good stuff but just want to add that while everyone focuses on Digital Literacy because indeed it is the future, we mustn't forget to combine IT skills with practical skills. Taking Mechanical Skills for example, you can learn theoretically how things work and come together on screen and work out tolerance values for interference fits via CAD and CAM systems, working to microns and getting near-real-life simulations but nothing drives home the concepts better than having a physical bearing in front of you to pull apart and put together; to touch and feel it for real. That way, the Digital world has a better context. Educationalists will drive computers in schools and colleges but along side we need practical workshops and facilities too to create broad-minded and multi-skilled engineers that will create our future industries with a holistic image of our Cyber-Real World.
