Digital Liberation...if you want it.

Digital Liberation...if you want it.

One of the amazing things about "the digital world” is that it enables you to do things in a way that previously would be unimaginable.

Last week I got up uber-early on Tuesday to drive from my house in Suffolk to Cranfield university (about 120 miles) for a 7:30 start.

What I did during the day made me think about the wonders of the technology we carry in our hands.

30 minutes of prep then a 45 minute livestream to LinkedIn/YouTube/Facebook/Twitter (for me and all the other contributors) followed by a client call, a team call, another two meetings and another 45 minute livestream with two remote participants the US.

The shows were consumed by people around the globe, the calls were with people spread across the country and all I needed for this was a laptop and a phone (and a pair of headphones to avoid background noise). This is the reality of living and working in the “NOW”…so how are you using this behaviour to liberate your working day?

It’s too easy for us to consider these tools as a way of doing what we’ve always done…but why not consider them as a way of doing what we’ve always WANTED to do?

I remember when I left a corporate role in 2002. I had a dream of being (what’s now called a Digital Nomad) I had my mobile phone, my taproot and a rather cool backpack. However, it’s wasn’t quite as easy on those days to simply go to Starbucks, log on and get working. Wifi wasn’t everywhere, setting up a personal hotspot with your phone wasn’t even a thing and even if the infrastructure was in place you would have got funny looks from people.

Now however we literally can be super connected but unplugged.

If you like walking in the country why not do a Teams call from the woods, why not combine your passion for the countryside with your work? If covid has had one positive legacy I would say it has been that people are no longer shocked when a child or a pet walks across the screen, people no longer feel disappointed when you have to pop-off and sign for an Amazon delivery.

Make use of this shift in expectations to make your work a more pleasurable experience.

If you are in sales this nomadic existence can be a great respite from the pressures of your quota…particularly if you have embraced social selling as your primary prospecting and conversation strategy.

These technological marvels have liberated us from the shackles of the office so why not take things up a notch.

I for one find the opportunities created by this technology incredibly exciting…and so should you.

Well said Adam. Technology has freed us from the 9 to 5 and a commute every day. Some people complain that they are on 24/7, I think that liberates you to choose your hours. Yes it’s great to get the the city once a week but the freedom of work anywhere is awesome.

Adam Gray, I love that you are championing your passion for technology, enablement, and transformation.?? ?? I wake up with the same passion everyday and it's what drives me and the work I do with my clients. Would be great to discuss or share ideas on this topic sometime. ????

I don't think I would be as productive in an "office" with a commute myself. But I guess I am a rare breed. I may be doing it soon though.

At my core, I am a teacher. I'm great at the middle of conversations. I'm not as athletic as I remember being.

Too often we take for granted things like this, Adam. And often that means squandering the opportunity too.
