Digital Leadership and the Future of Work

Leadership is a building block of all organizations. We exist in a global market setting where a trend towards digitalization offers a crucial competitive advantage. Entrepreneurs and businesses (in any stage of growth), across the world, are increasingly investing in integrating leadership skills in their workforce. To achieve digital leadership, one must elegantly marry both the management of the company’s digital assets and at a more human level, the establishment of more efficient and effective communication within the workforce.

The Individual Digital Leader

To understand the crux of digital leadership, it is best first to examine the role of an individual digital leader. In many regards, digital leaders are not much different from chief operations officers, human resource managers, and chief financial officers. Their job revolves around the maximization of the value of the assets for which they are liable. One way a digital leader does this is by ensuring the integrity of information on which the company depends.

Businesses, especially in this day and age, are heavily dependent on digital information to ensure that operations remain efficient and effective. Because of the integral role of information across the entire corporate fabric, digital leaders must enact a rigorous verification process before any new input is delivered to the company's internal workings. This safeguards the company's operations, and as such, helps maximize its market value.

The New Skill Set

In a larger context, digital leadership may apply to a company as a whole relative to its peers. Companies that give a premium on digital leadership tend to focus on soft skills such as problem-solving, creativity, communication, and innovation, among others. This shift is brought forth by the increasingly rapid transformation of society and, as a consequence, the market because of the unprecedented speed of information technology.

While a few decades back reform and/or news within a particular country or region would take anywhere from days to months to be felt on an international scale, now they can do so in seconds. Such a massive change must, therefore, warrant an equally enormous paradigm shift in the way business is done, and digital leadership is one such means of adaptation.

The Future of Work

In the 21st century, it is safe to assume that the future of work would revolve around information and the digital sphere. In this respect, the largest scale of digital leadership would be countries and regions. The market has now been intricately connected by a high-speed network.  So while national and regional policies may still hold sway on how open their respective economies are, it is nonetheless becoming increasingly demanding, and futile, to do so in the face of a globalized information superhighway.

Of course, this puts pressure on national and regional entities to adopt policies relevant to the pursuit of strong digital leadership, not just for commercial interests but also for security and social purposes.

To sum, the trend towards digitalization and digital transformation has seen the rise of digital leadership, various pertinent skills, and leadership influence that enable individuals, entrepreneurs, corporations, nations, and regions to shift along with the tide and enable faster, more efficient, and seamless transitions. The future of work and the future workplace is a bright one but it will require a new vision, new skills, and a new digital leader.
