The Digital Ghost...

The Digital Ghost...

Prior to 2020 I was what you could call... a digital ghost. What's a digital ghost, you say? A digital ghost by my definition is someone that has little to know digital trace on the Internet.

Now, at first, this may seem like a great thing.

For others, you may remain offline because most would agree there is a certain peace that exists with anonymity. My main reason to stay offline for the majority of my life was a decision bathed in the fact I'm an introvert, a reserved and quiet person who is introspective and enjoys spending time alone.

In fact, when I was in my teens I was a mildly, socially awkward teenager that only spoke when I absolutely had to. Being an introvert, for me, proved to be a double-edged sword. In some ways, my introverted temperament worked against me based on the fact most times I was uncomfortable speaking up or sharing my ideas. Many times both me and my work would go unnoticed, as a result.

On the other hand, where being an introvert proved to be beneficial was in my academic studies. Yes, I was a Straight 'A' student, year after year.

I maintained this dynamic throughout my twenties and thirties. Accomplishing amazing things and building a stellar body of work in my respective tech industry.

A BIG Problem Was Brewing

What I realized on the path I was on is it was a lonely road. Because I minimized social interaction and had no Internet presence, not too many people knew of my accomplishments, nor could people benefit from my talents at scale because I didn't have a platform or community to hear the message.

What happens when no one really knows you? I'll tell you very bluntly... it's hard to make an impact. You spend all your time working hard, and in the grander scheme of things it has little to no impact except only for those closes to you in your inner circle.

A Wakeup Call

When I crossed the FORTIES threshold (Yes I'm In My Forties Now), how I was formally operating just didn't sit well with me anymore. I was tired of being the 'bump on the log', minimizing and blanketing my talents because of my shy and reserved personality. But life would ultimately wake me up through a series of tragic, compounding life events:

  • My father passing in 2011 after a hard fought battle with Alzheimer's
  • My sister having a major stroke in 2018 that tragically changed the trajectory of her life
  • My Divorce in 2019, concluding an 18 year marriage
  • And to top it off, in 2020, throwing a Global Pandemic in the mix spiraling us all further into isolation

Turn Pain Into Power

I started to become keenly aware of my own mortality and brevity of life through this snowball effect of painful events in my own life. It was the accumulation of these painful, life altering events that served as the impetus for me to build a foundation for a platform to help others on their personal development journey. The idea was fueled by my own struggle to figure out how to pull myself back together after life had delivered me a series of knockout punches.

I would have to embark on a lonely journey to find hope again when it was in limited supply and rise from the depths of despair.

This is how ThoughtfulTechy was born.

This is so true Greg Powell. It's almost obligitory now for someone in security to have to have a blog. I too have been working at sharing. Its a slow process for me --maybe very slow. It's not quite yet my nature to post in such public forums. Countless times I have been helped by someone's tutorials or other bits of advice they shared, saving me countless hours of struggle. I am inspired to do the same. Thanks for motivation.
