Digital Experts: The Space Economy Needs You

In the early days of satellite imagery, remote sensing images were taken on film and then dropped back to earth to be captured by an airplane, known as the CORONA program.? While there were basic data links to control the satellite, computing power and data transfer were not a major feature of these early satellite programs.

Today things have changed drastically as all satellites or space vehicles, from picosats to Starship, are filled with computer microprocessors, data storage devices, networked data and communication links, as well as robust ground stations/systems.?

?

All of these require a robust workforce of programmers and software engineers to develop, implement, and maintain these systems.? This also includes the need for cyber security and data protection schemas to prevent nefarious actors from accessing or causing damage to these important and expensive systems.

Today’s satellites are also collecting enormous amounts of data every day that needs to be transferred to the ground, stored, analyzed and manipulate to meet the needs of clients and operators. As an example, NASA alone was generating 12.1TB of data every single day in 2017 , not even considering other national space entities or commercial space companies.? Developing automated software systems and tools to manage and exploit all this data is another important aspect of space operations outside of flying the satellites themselves.

The Following is a list of common career positions we see being advertised within the Space Economy:

·????? Information Systems Security Engineer

·????? Information Systems Security Officer

·????? Information Systems Security Manager

·????? Infrastructure Administrator

·????? Network Administrator

·????? DevSecOps Engineer

·????? IT Systems Solutions Architect

·????? Cybersecurity Compliance Auditor

?

If you are a cyber, programming or network professional, the space industry is badly in need of your expertise.? If you do not have a background in space, have no fear. Nova Space can give you the space background you need to be successful applying your unique skillsets to the space domain.

In the US & other places, one recruiting challenge seems to be the geographic concentration of the industry in a short list of states. It seems there is work to be done there.
