Digital Environment Security for Children in Spain and the Basque Country

Dear readers,

This is the twenty-second issue of a series of newsletters dedicated to exploring the challenges and opportunities related to childhood and adolescence in the Basque Country, Spain, and the world.

You can subscribe here to our digital newsletter, Basque Country Childhood Digital Newsletter, and also become part of our official community in Basque Country Childhood - Official Group.

As President of UNICEF Basque Country, it is an honor for me to lead this initiative, which represents a commitment to promoting children's rights and seeking collaboration with all public and private actors involved in the well-being of our children and adolescents.

In the digital age, children and adolescents spend a significant part of their time connected to the Internet, accessing social networks, educational platforms, and entertainment applications. While technology offers multiple benefits, it also exposes young people to risks that require special attention. In this issue, we will explore the main risks of the digital environment and the necessary measures to protect children online. We will highlight some educational programs and introduce security tools that can help create a safe and enriching digital environment.

Risks in the Digital Environment for Children

Digital connectivity has transformed the way children and adolescents interact, learn, and entertain themselves. However, this connectivity also presents risks that can affect their safety, privacy, and emotional well-being.

  1. Cyberbullying and School Bullying

Cyberbullying is one of the main problems children face in the digital environment. Unlike bullying in the physical environment, cyberbullying can occur at any time and place, which can make victims feel constantly exposed. Bullying on social networks and messaging platforms can lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.

2. Exposure to Inappropriate Content

The lack of safety filters and supervision on some digital platforms can lead to children accessing inappropriate or harmful content, such as violent or sexual material. This exposure can affect their development and perception of reality, as minors may not be prepared to process such content.

3. Privacy and Use of Personal Data

Children are also vulnerable in terms of privacy and use of personal data. Many applications and social networks collect information about their users, and minors may not be aware of the risks associated with sharing personal data online. This can lead to privacy issues and, in extreme cases, grooming or contact with adults with malicious intentions.

Measures and Tools to Protect Children Online

To create a safe digital environment for children and adolescents, it is essential to implement a combination of preventive measures, security tools, and education. Parental supervision, the use of control applications, and education on the safe use of the Internet are key elements to protect minors online.

  1. Parental Supervision and Content Control

The use of parental control applications is an effective measure to limit children's access to inappropriate content and monitor their online activity. These applications allow parents to block certain types of content, set time limits, and monitor their children's interactions on social networks.

  • Recommended applications: Tools like Qustodio, Google Family Link, and Microsoft Family Safety offer advanced options to control minors' digital activity and provide alerts in case of suspicious behavior.

2. Digital Education in Schools

Digital education is essential for children to understand online risks and learn to protect themselves. In the Basque Country, educational programs have been implemented that address topics such as online privacy, cyberbullying prevention, and the responsible use of social networks. These programs, taught in schools, aim to empower students to navigate the digital environment safely and consciously.

3. Promoting Open Communication

Maintaining open communication with children about their online lives is essential to identify and resolve issues. Parents can create a trusting environment where children feel comfortable sharing their experiences in the digital environment, including uncomfortable or problematic situations. This facilitates the early detection of risks and allows timely intervention.

Educational Programs and Security Tools

Education and technology play a crucial role in protecting children in the digital environment. In addition to the programs implemented in schools, there are tools and resources designed to teach children about safe navigation and provide parents with the necessary knowledge to guide them.

  1. Online Educational Resources

Platforms like Internet Segura for Kids offer free resources for children, families, and educators. These resources include guides, educational videos, and interactive activities that teach young people how to protect their privacy, identify potential risks, and navigate safely.

  • Interactive lessons: The activities of Internet Segura for Kids are designed for children to learn about online safety in a playful and interactive way, which facilitates the understanding of important concepts.

2. Workshops for Parents and Educators

Workshops for parents and educators are also fundamental to improving children's digital security. These workshops, organized by the government and NGOs in the Basque Country, provide tools and strategies to supervise Internet use at home and teach minors about the importance of protecting their personal information.

Testimonials from Families and Educators

To better understand the impact of these measures, we share some testimonials from parents and educators who have implemented digital security measures at home and in schools.

  • Testimony 1: Idoia, mother of two children in San Sebastián "Using parental control applications has given my husband and me peace of mind. We know our children are protected from inappropriate content and that we can supervise their activity without invading their privacy."
  • Testimony 2: Aitor, primary school teacher in Bilbao "In our school, we have integrated digital education programs to teach children about online safety. It is essential for students to understand the risks and how to protect themselves to navigate the Internet safely and responsibly."

Conclusions

Security in the digital environment is a priority in protecting children and adolescents, as the Internet has become an integral part of their lives. Although technology offers opportunities for learning and socialization, it is crucial to ensure that children are protected from the risks that this environment can present. With preventive measures, proper education, and the use of security tools, it is possible to create a safer and more enriching digital space.

From UNICEF Basque Country, we will continue to support initiatives and programs that promote online safety and continue to work to ensure that all children and adolescents can enjoy the benefits of technology without putting their well-being at risk.
