A Digital Disruption

The last ten years has seen a profound change in business. This change has rewarded the innovators and decimated the status quo. What I am referring to is a Digital Disruption that has revolutionized many industries. You may be thinking, I never heard the term before. What does it mean? Well here it is - Digital disruption is the change that occurs when new digital technologies and business models affect the value proposition of existing goods and services.

The simplest way to illustrate my point is to lay out examples. Here are just a few disrupters:

·       Netflix – the world’s largest movie house has no cinemas;

·       Uber – largest taxi company owns no taxis (Uber considers themselves a technology company) ~ interesting;

·       Skype – largest phone company owns no telecommunications infrastructure;

·       Facebook – The world’s most popular media owner creates no contact;

·       Airbnb – Largest accommodation provider owns no real estate;

·       Amazon – Largest retailer owns no stores; and

·       Pandora – The world’s most popular radio station isn’t on the airwaves.

These are just a few companies that are disrupting some of the largest industries in the world. All of them have a common denominator. Did you pick up on it as you were reading through the list? All the above companies were grassroot movements. Insightful entrepreneurs with the drive to create something amazing and moving at light speed.
