1EdTech Launches Open Badges 3.0 with Integrated CTDL

1EdTech Consortium has released Open Badges 3.0 (OB3), integrating the Credential Transparency Description Language (CTDL) into its specification. This advancement simplifies data mapping and enhances the connectivity of badges through linked open data, significantly boosting the functionality and value of digital credentials. The integration of CTDL provides a consistent language to describe various credentials comprehensively, making it easier for employers to understand and value these achievements.

OB3 formalizes this process by defining credential types that match CTDL definitions and establishing key alignments to CTDL information. This allows technical systems to access linked CTDL data reliably, improving credential clarity and discoverability. Additionally, OB3 categorizes achievements into specific types, such as assessments, micro-credentials, and certifications, many of which align with existing CTDL definitions. This ensures that any system interpreting a badge can easily access and process additional CTDL information, further enhancing the utility of digital credentials.

Google Chrome Enhances Login Security with Digital Credentials

As Europe enforces stricter data protection measures, Google Chrome is testing a new feature to simplify and secure logins through Digital Credentials. A new flag, “#web-identity-digital-credentials,” has been spotted in Google Chrome Canary on Android, enabling a secure identity verification model. This feature allows users to disclose specific information, like age, from their mobile wallet, enhancing security without passwords. Driven by the EU's eIDAS regulation, this feature will be tested on Android first, with plans to expand to other platforms by 2026.

EU Digital Wallet’s eIDAS Testbed Goes Live

The go.eIDAS Association , in collaboration with partners such as C&S Computer und Software GmbH and the Eclipse Foundation , has launched the eIDAS-Testbed to support the European Digital Identity Framework. This initiative mandates EU Member States to provide European Digital Identity Wallets (EUDIW) by 2026, facilitating cross-border authentication and electronic signatures. The EUDIW will support Verifiable Credentials (VC) using OpenID protocols. Validated at the OpenID-Wallet-Plugfest, the testbed integrates with the eIDAS-Network, aiming for interoperability and privacy across sectors like eGovernment and eHealth. Interested parties are invited to join the initiative to promote a secure and interoperable digital identity ecosystem in Europe.
