Digital Construction

Digital Construction, also known as virtual construction or building information modelling (BIM), refers to the use of digital technologies to improve the design, construction, and operation of buildings and infrastructure. This approach allows for the creation of virtual models of a project, which can be used to simulate and optimize various aspects of the design and construction process.

One of the key benefits of digital construction is improved collaboration and coordination among all stakeholders in a project. By creating a digital model of a project, architects, engineers, and contractors can all work together in a shared virtual environment, which helps to reduce the risk of errors and misunderstandings. In addition, the use of digital technologies can also improve the accuracy and precision of the design and construction process, which can help to reduce the need for costly changes and rework.

Another important benefit of digital construction is the ability to simulate and optimize various aspects of a project before it is built. This can include the analysis of structural integrity, energy performance, and environmental impact, among other factors. By using digital tools to simulate these aspects of a project, it is possible to identify potential issues and make adjustments before construction begins, which can help to save time and money.

In addition to the benefits for design and construction, digital construction can also improve the operation and maintenance of a building or infrastructure project. By creating a digital model of a project, it is possible to generate detailed information about the various components and systems of a building, which can be used to improve the efficiency and reliability of its operation.

Overall, digital construction offers a range of benefits for the design, construction, and operation of buildings and infrastructure. By leveraging the power of digital technologies, it is possible to improve collaboration, optimize performance, and reduce the risk of errors and delays. As a result, the use of digital construction is becoming increasingly common in the construction industry.

One of the challenges the industry is having is the requirement for a new way of working. While BIM is requiring collaboration and integration our historical ways of working do not. So we need to change as an industry in order to reap the benefits. Secondly BIM is about information and not geometry. This seems to be the biggest struggle for people to understand. A wall in a model can look like a wall but the information behind it or imbedded in it is what is important and this is the one area that is lacking. Models are designed for the production of drawings and clash detection but this can be done with a very low quality of information. So I think we need to talk more about this, not what the benefits are bit how do we get to these benefits and what does that look like.
