The Digital Audio Workstation
What is a DAW
A DAW or digital audio workstation is a type of software that allows you to record, mix and edit audio. Digital music production has become one of the most popular types of music-making today. There are many different DAWs on the market and this article will explain what they do and why they're so important.
The first DAW was created in 1977 by a company called Soundstream but it wasn't until 1989 that Digidesign released Sound tools, the predecessor to Pro Tools.
Daws revolutionized how music was made. Before that, you needed a lot of different hardware to create a song. You needed a synthesizer, sampler, drum machine and mixer. With a DAW, all of these devices can be replaced by a single piece of software. This makes music production a lot easier and more affordable.
How a DAW works
How does a DAW work? Well, it allows you to record audio from different sources, such as microphones, guitars or keyboards into a computer. You need an audio interface to convert the signal. You can also use software instruments or VSTs. These programmes emulate instruments from synths to pianos. There is even software that emulates the human voice although at the time of writing it isn't very convincing. Another method is to use samples, prerecorded audio files. You can then mix these components together and add effects like reverb or delay. Finally, you can export the song to a digital format like MP3 or WAV.

Leading DAWS
Pro Tools has always been seen as the industry standard and is still used by many producers. There is this belief in certain circles that a professional audio production studio must use Pro Tools but as Bob Dylan said. "The Times they are a changing". Currently, the most popular DAW on the market is Abelton Live, probably down to its clip launch feature which makes it the perfect tool for Remixing and live performance. Cubase has been around for years and has a loyal user base. Logic Pro is Mac only but it's marketed by Apple so for many Apple Fanboys it is their weapon of choice. It is also a very powerful and capable DAW
A Daw that is gaining ground and my personal favourite is Studio One. Studio One is the new kid on the block but when it comes to ease of use stands out from the crowd. Another Daw gaining popularity is Reaper which you can pick up for about £60. It is a powerful DAW and has an amazing value.
Also, a notable mention must go to Fruity Loops. It has a silly name but there have been some bangers created with Fruity. It has a nice user interface.
