Opt-outs are meaningless
Time is running out for anyone in the UK’s creative sectors to protest the government’s proposal to change ‘fair use’ conventions and allow AI vendors to train generative systems on copyrighted material. At present, unlicensed use of copyrighted material – for example, a novel, an image, a design, a movie, a song – is forbidden in the context of developing commercial products, but a fair use exception is allowed for academic research.
