Last week I was digging with the wonderful Archeoscan (https://www.archeoscan.com) at Guiting Power in Gloucestershire, UK, where a fortified manor house dating to the 11th and 12th centuries has been uncovered on gently sloping ground. The discovery of Constantinian coins, along with a flue tile, suggests that a Roman villa once lay further up the hill. What characterises the Norman manor house are the wide foundations of a tower. Topographical and geophysical surveys highlight the surrounding field boundaries and outbuildings. When the site was abandoned sometime in the late mediaeval period, New Manor was built closer to where the modern village lies.
