The difficult we do immediately and the impossible takes a little longer

By Jason Abell

In the brisk autumn of 1979, after completing the last chore of the season—raking leaves and mowing the lawn—my father and I faced a predicament. It was time to stow away the mower for the winter, yet our trusty handheld pump for siphoning gas had failed us. With the prospect of stale gas rendering the mower useless come spring, we were in a bind. But my father, undeterred, demonstrated a solution that left an indelible mark on my young mind.

In a moment that epitomized both resourcefulness and determination, my WWII veteran father improvised. Without hesitation, he inserted one end of the siphon hose into the mower's tank and the other into his mouth, deftly initiating the flow of gas. Witnessing the fluid ascent through the opaque tube, I marveled as he swiftly redirected the stream into the portable gas tank, spitting out the mouthful of fuel he had inadvertently acquired.

Beyond the sheer audacity of the act, there lay a profound lesson—one that has since become a guiding principle in both my personal and professional life. You see, my father is renowned in our family for his sage advice, chief among them being: "The difficult we do immediately; the impossible takes a little longer." While I had heard this mantra countless times before, its significance crystallized for me in that moment of ingenuity with the siphon.
