The Different Style of Learning

What are learning styles??

Learning styles describe unique preferences for how we like to learn and how we best remember new information.

Why should you determine your learning style?

Identifying your learning style entails determining how you learn best. You can use this information to your advantage when studying by employing learning methods that suit you, such as taking notes, constructing mind maps, using models, or reciting aloud. This can help you with in-class learning as well as exam revision.

Different Types of Learning Styles

With that said, let's look at each learning style and how it might be addressed in the classroom or a child's learning environment.

Visual

Visual learners (also known as spatial learners) learn by using pictures, colors, and images. They are familiar with and enjoy maps and charts. Their spatial cognition is strong, and they can easily understand the positioning of items in their surroundings. The occipital lobes in the back of the brain control vision. The occipital and parietal lobes are in charge of spatial understanding.

A Visual Learner has the following characteristics:

  • Whenever possible, chooses to sit at the front of the classroom
  • Information is better understood when it is presented in the form of a chart or graph. Creates outlines for everything
  • Copies what is written on the board; see colors in everything; and creates lists with bullets and stars
  • Likes visual technology

Auditory

The auditory (aural) learner is a child that recalls information better when it is reinforced by sound. They appreciate music and can distinguish between notes. These children enjoy voice and song recordings, such as podcasts or auditory lectures, and they frequently sing to themselves. The auditory information is handled by the brain's temporal lobe. For music, the right temporal lobe is especially important.

Auditory learners have the following characteristics:

  • Prefers lectures over reading the material and frequently reads aloud to themselves
  • Participates in conversations and enjoys debate
  • Songs or jingles are used to help people remember vital information

Verbal

The verbal or linguistic learner is fascinated by spoken and written words. Children like both listening to and reading the written word. They have an easy time expressing themselves. The temporal and frontal lobes of the brain are responsible for this learning type.

A verbal learner has the following characteristics:

  • Generally, an excellent memory
  • Will reread and rewrite the notes
  • Makes keyword lists when studying and enjoys role-playing when learning new topics
  • Excellent at word games, rhymes, and tongue twisters
  • Does a good job of putting thoughts on paper

Kinesthetic

?The kinesthetic (physical) learner investigates their surroundings through touch. The child learns by moving around and using their hands a lot. They learn best in vast environments and enjoy moving about, which is why this learning style is ideal for sensory seekers. This learning approach is frequently used by children who love manipulating a model or an actual thing that is being taught. The cerebellum and the motor cortex (located at the back of the frontal lobe) control much of the child's physical movement processes.

A kinesthetic learner has the following characteristics:

  • Enjoys drawing and doing many kinds of art
  • Building with blocks and counting with objects come easily
  • Hands-on learning is perfect for these children
  • These students benefit from reading or repeating while walking back and forth
  • Thriving on teachings transformed into art projects
  • Athletic ability
  • Lives in the present moment

Logical

This learner (also known as a mathematical learner) excels at mathematics and logical reasoning. These children can easily solve many difficulties. Cause and effect relationships are particularly well understood by logical learners. They try to categorize and organize everything because it helps their brain make sense of the material. The parietal lobes of the brain, particularly the left side, are responsible for logical thinking.

The following are characteristics of the logical learner:

  • Likes strategy games
  • Organises and classifies objects
  • Excellent with numbers
  • Likes to know why things are done the way they are.
  • Superior reasoning abilities
  • Statistics are the focus
  • Enjoys maths games and cognitive challenges

Social

The social (also known as interpersonal) youngster learns best in a group setting. This learner is typically a good communicator who enjoys conversing with others. Positive attitudes are fostered in this child by social interactions and huge groups of individuals. Much of a person's social actions are handled by the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain.

The following are characteristics of the social learner:

  • Excellent at group learning
  • Can readily read other people's feelings
  • Socially intelligent individuals enjoy sharing their knowledge and teaching others what they have learned
  • Easy to communicate with and enjoys talking

Solitary

This solitary (intrapersonal) learner prefers to work alone and thrives in peaceful environments. They want to study and learn on their own. They excel at self-management of goals and time management. The intrapersonal youngster enjoys playing alone and has a vivid imagination.

This form of learning is also handled by the frontal and temporal lobes. The limbic system is also involved in mood and basic emotions.

The following are characteristics of the lone learner:

  • Prefers working alone
  • In a communal environment, perceived as the quiet one In sync with feelings
  • Will look for a peaceful and pleasant study location
  • Sets personal learning or success objectives
  • Enjoys keeping a journal

Students can achieve their learning potential more easily if they understand their preferred learning styles and also develop and practice skills in the other learning types. When a child is a well-rounded learner, they will be able to adapt to various educational, personal, and social circumstances.

These apply to adults as well. However adults have ego plus prior learning.
