Different Life Scenes - Different Communication Styles (Understand Your Communication Style)

Scene 1

An 8-year-old girl studying in 4th standard was sitting in her class. Then Reshu came to her & gave her a chocolate and a card and said Happy Best friend day Neha. You are my best friend.

That 8-year-old girl was me. I was surprised & I was thinking “I have already exchanged cards & toffees with Pooja. Pooja & I are best friends. Can one person be the best friend of more than one person?”

Well who doesn’t like chocolates, So I accepted it and we shared a smile. After all, she was my good friend.

After some time while playing in the ground, Hina came to me & Said Neha you are my best friend and this gift is for you. She gave me a small peacock a showpiece. She said I love talking with you Neha, you really supported me in many situations.

I said to myself. Yes one person can be the best friend of more than one person.

That was actually because of my Supportive Communication Style.

This style is calm, steady, approachable, sincere, and gentle. More often such person is perceived as careful, patient, and amiable. Due to such person’s active listening skills, others see her as cooperative, dependable, and loyal.

Scene 2

Alka & I were travelling via Auto from college to our home. She said Neha when I saw you on 1st day in our graduation’s first-class I thought you were self-assured but the overconfident girl who was laughing and talking to everyone and was over showing her intelligence. But now I realized that you are not like so, you are very down to earth and you are a sweet and nice person.

Next day Jeetu met me in NCC class and said you know Neha, yesterday when I was talking about you with Shashi, then how he recognized you? I ask How? He said Shashi said Oh! That girl who always laughs whenever and wherever you see her.

That was actually because of my Initiating Communication style. This style is sociable, enthusiastic, energetic, spontaneous, and fun-loving. Sometimes, such person may be perceived as someone who talks more than listens and often perceived as self-assured, innovative, and persuasive.

Scene 3

A few months back I was sitting in a conference room with my team members, it was a weekly review meeting, I said you all will have to complete this task within the timeline or else be ready to face the repercussions.

This is a direct communication style. This style is decisive, competitive, independent, and confident. Because the person with such communication style is focused, results-oriented, ambitious, goal-oriented, and driven, others may perceive her as strong-willed or demanding.

Like I also always thinks that my Boss is always very Demanding

After a few days, there was a monthly review meeting with the team. I appreciated Ruchi as she has prepared the monthly report very well with all the facts and numbers. I asked Priya, why the targets were not achieved when she started telling me the excuses or reasons, I said don’t tell me stories tell me the numbers, charts, facts, graphs.

At this time my communication style becomes Analytical.

This style is precise, exact, analytical, and logical.

In-office I am not sticking to Direct and analytical communication styles. At the time of motivating the team, I adopt a supportive and initiating communication style also, so that there we all can feel comfortable with each other, can have a better understanding and can have a friendly environment to work together.

This is about my different communication styles in different life situations. We cannot say that one person can have only one type of communication style in all situations and we cannot say that particular one communication style is good or bad. Every individual has his/her own way of communicating his/her feelings and thoughts.

After getting an idea about the 4 different ways of communication styles, What do you think? Your way of communicating tends to which type of communication style?

Supportive, Initiating, Direct, Analytical.

Take your time & Think over it.

Thank you.
