A Different Direction

A Different Direction

On a frequent basis I am asked what it is like working with my husband. Intriguing concept? I was motivated this morning to sit down and write about that topic, but I was taken in a different direction.

Life is filled with curveballs, obstacles, highs and lows. The word “Life” means to exist. I often hear people refer to life as unfair or difficult. Life is life. We exist, we make decisions and we act; and we do not operate in a vacuum of just one. My actions and decisions not only affect me, they affect my loved ones and everyone I encounter. I control what I can [or think I can] and try to let go of that which I cannot. That can be a huge struggle. At least it has been for me. A work in progress if you will.

The Universe works in mysterious ways and I do believe in its powers. I have always been drawn to different views and theories, and more recently explored the teachings of Buddhism. Exploring other cultures and religions is quite fascinating and has been invaluable to me on my path towards self-improvement. Many Buddhist lessons, for example, provide insight into leading a more meaningful life, i.e. focusing on fundamental values versus the materialism we are frequently exposed to. More than ever, we need the reminder that we coexist and need to work together harmoniously.

Learning to let go was a major takeaway from my reading about Buddhism; and actually letting go was life-changing. When you let go of the idea that you can control everything, and that every decision is critical, it allows a sense of freedom. This freedom provides the opportunity to be more present. Being present offers a heightened attention to cues and signs. Deep down you may know that something is not working, but you are not ready to make a change. If you pay attention, you may notice signs pointing you into a different direction or giving you a push to do something you have been considering.

I was involved in my first entrepreneurial venture for many years. It wasn’t a complete failure, but it wasn’t the huge success I had once thought it would be. A “labor of love” would be a fitting description. There were many times I wanted to leave the position I held, but I didn’t know what I would do next, so I stayed put. The details regarding why I left are inconsequential. The point is, it was time, and everything was telling me it was time to go and do something else. It was clear as a sunny Miami winter day. Everything came to a head and I made my exit.

My husband and I discussed starting a talent solutions agency for years, but the timing never seemed right. Shortly after I left the aforementioned position, everything lined up and we were both enthusiastic about launching The GIGG. I have experienced this aligning of the stars before [and again more recently], and it is an incredible force to experience. Simply put, everything feels right and makes sense. It is pretty awesome! We launched this past November with a number of very fortunate wins that I attribute to our abilities, timing and the Universe. Our future looks bright!

Maybe my next writing project will actually be on what it is like to work with my husband…

I started my first business 2 years ago under quite similar circumstances. Labor of love. I understand that. LOL. Best!?
