A different challenge
Just a quick note to all my LinkedIn colleagues and friends -a lot of colleagues already know, but for those who don't...
A week last Tuesday (2 July) I came in from work and had some sort of seizure about 15 minutes after getting in the house. Ambulance called and original suspicion was a minor stroke. Down at A&E and through a bunch of tests we found out differently. I left the hospital on Thursday, was back for more tests on Monday and now know I have a tumour in my left lung and in my right parietal brain lobe. The seizure was caused by the brain tumour creating pressure in my brain. The high likelihood is cancer with the expectation subject to further tests, biopsy and surgery that the lung cancer will be primary and the brain a secondary metastasis.
So what's next - well I have more tests including a lung biopsy to go through over the next 2 weeks, before I go in for brain surgery at the Royal Salford Hospital on 1 August (way to celebrate our 21st Wedding Anniversary!) I'm reasonably young and healthy so the answer for the brain tumour is just to cut it straight out. There are a few risks, but nothing that would make me doubt going ahead for a second. Further treatment of the lung tumor we don't know about yet.
I am in good spirits and feeling positive about it all, so don't need kind words or sympathy, but neither am I too proud to turn them away when freely offered!
I'm not really planning to do many posts on what happens on here - if you're interested or want to know, get in touch and I'm usually happy to share.
This is not the challenge I was expecting to go into as I rolled round into my 5th decade, but it's the one the dice have rolled for me - all we can do is in these situations is think positive and plan to win - that's what I intend to do. With any luck I'll be back telling you all about HPE compute in just a few months!
Love to all,
Duncan

Hi Duncan I don’t know you but I do know Nigel Allen so we have a positive connection 3 thoughts and insights for you rather than offer you sympathy/empathy which I am sure you will get in abundance 1 My brother went through a similar experience and came through it largely through attitude and understanding and applying how the brain ?? works and it’s infinite capacity see point 2 2 Let me point you to Neuroscience and neuroplasticity and the fundamental principles underpinning this science Happy to take a call to expand on how it may help you 3 The best resource I know on the planet is @petecohen Reach out look at his work and he has some inspirational insights and relevance to your situation His ethos is how can I help ? Best wishes on your path and looking to hear about that positive outcome

5 年Duncan I admire your positive attitude to this awful situation. My son went through a similar challenge 4yrs ago with the same fighting spirit and was successful in beating the beast. I will be thinking of you in the weeks ahead and look forward to good news as you progress through it.
