Differences Between Positive Displacement and Centrifugal Pumps

Positive Displacement Pumps and Centrifugal Pumps are two distinct types of pumps that operate on different principles and have different applications. Here are the key differences between the two:

  1. Operating Principle:

  • Positive Displacement Pumps: These pumps operate by trapping a fixed amount of fluid and then forcing it into the discharge pipe. They create flow by physically displacing the fluid using reciprocating, rotary, or diaphragm mechanisms.
  • Centrifugal Pumps: These pumps operate by converting rotational energy into kinetic energy. They use a rotating impeller to increase the fluid's velocity and create a centrifugal force that moves the fluid from the center to the periphery of the impeller.

2. Flow Characteristics:

  • Positive Displacement Pumps: These pumps provide a relatively constant flow rate regardless of changes in system pressure. They are suitable for applications requiring a steady flow or handling viscous fluids.
  • Centrifugal Pumps: The flow rate of centrifugal pumps varies with changes in system pressure. Their flow rate increases as the discharge pressure decreases. They are better suited for applications with higher flow rates and low to medium viscosity fluids.

  1. Pressure Capability:

  • Positive Displacement Pumps: These pumps are capable of generating high pressures as they create flow by directly displacing the fluid. They can handle high-pressure applications, but the pressure capacity may vary based on pump design and construction.
  • Centrifugal Pumps: These pumps are generally not designed for high-pressure applications. They are more suitable for delivering fluids at moderate to low pressures. However, multiple stages of centrifugal pumps can be used in series to achieve higher pressures.

4. Efficiency:

  • Positive Displacement Pumps: These pumps tend to have higher efficiencies over a wide range of flow rates and pressures. They are more efficient in handling viscous fluids and are less affected by changes in system conditions.
  • Centrifugal Pumps: The efficiency of centrifugal pumps varies with the flow rate and head. They are generally more efficient at higher flow rates and lower heads. Efficiency can decrease if the pump operates away from its design point.

5. Application Areas:

  • Positive Displacement Pumps: These pumps are commonly used for applications such as dosing chemicals, oil and gas transfer, metering fluids, high-pressure hydraulic systems, and handling viscous fluids, including paints, adhesives, and food products.
  • Centrifugal Pumps: These pumps are widely used in applications such as water supply, irrigation, wastewater treatment, HVAC systems, fire protection, industrial processes, and large-scale fluid transportation.

It's important to choose the appropriate pump type based on the specific requirements of the application, including flow rate, pressure, fluid characteristics, and system dynamics. Each pump type has its advantages and limitations, and understanding these differences is crucial for selecting the most suitable pump for a given application.

The difference between positive pumps and centrifugal pumps There is no difference between them at work But the difference is in the principle of work, both pumps are the same design, only the principle of work differs
