Differences between ASME SA516 Grade 60, 65, and Grade 70 pressure vessel plates

ASME SA516 Grade 60, 65, and 70 pressure vessel plates differ in many aspects, including tensile strength, chemical composition, application fields, and heat treatment requirements. The following is a detailed analysis of the differences between the three:

1. Tensile strength

SA516 Grade 60: Its tensile strength is 60 thousand pounds per square inch, which is approximately 413MPa. This strength level makes it suitable for the manufacture of medium and low temperature pressure vessels.

SA516 Grade 65: The tensile strength is slightly higher than SA516 Grade 60, Tensile strength range is between 450-585 MPa. SA516 Grade 65 also has specific requirements for yield strength and elongation, yield strength σ0.2 is not less than 240 MPa, elongation δ4% is not less than 23%.

SA516 Grade 70: Its tensile strength is 70 thousand pounds per square inch, which is approximately 482MPa. This has the highest tensile strength of the three and is suitable for pressure vessels requiring higher strength requirements.

2. Chemical composition

Although the specific chemical composition range may vary slightly from different manufacturers and batches, SA516 Grade 60, 65, and 70 have a certain control range in the content of major elements (such as C, Mn, Si, P, S). Generally speaking, as the grade increases, the upper limit requirements for alloying elements such as carbon (C) and manganese (Mn) may increase to increase the strength and hardness of the material. However, it should be noted that the specific chemical composition requirements should refer to the latest ASME standards.

3. SA516 grade 60, A516 grade 65, A516 grade 70 steel plate heat treatment:

1) ASTM A516 steel plates 1.50 in. [40 mm] and under in thickness are normally supplied in the as-rolled condition. The plates may be ordered normalized or stress relieved, or both.

2) ASTM A516 steel plates over 1.50 in. [40 mm] in thickness shall be normalized.

3) When notch-toughness tests are required on plates 1.5 in. [40 mm] and under in thickness, the A516 steel plates shall be normalized unless otherwise specified by the purchaser.

When there are requirements for notch toughness, normalizing treatment should be carried out regardless of the thickness of the steel plate.

If approved by the purchaser, cooling rates greater than those in air are permitted to improve toughness, but the plate shall subsequently be tempered within a specified temperature range.

4. Application areas

These three types of pressure vessel plates are widely used in petroleum, chemical industry, power stations, boilers and other industries. They can be used to make equipment and components such as reactors, heat exchangers, separators, spherical tanks, gas tanks, liquefied gas tanks, nuclear reactor pressure shells, boiler drums, liquefied petroleum gas bottles, high-pressure water pipes in hydropower stations, water turbine casings, etc. .

Since SA516 Grade 70 has a higher tensile strength, it may be more suitable for applications where higher strength requirements are required.
