When explaining the differences between Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and Agentic AI, I often share the following story:
Once upon a time, in a prosperous kingdom, there was a wise king who relied on two key figures to manage his affairs: his diligent personal assistant and his astute prime minister, Agenta.
The personal assistant was always by the king's side, attending to his immediate needs and executing tasks as instructed.
One day, while observing from the castle's fortifications, the king noticed a commotion near the marketplace.
Curious, he summoned his personal assistant.
"What is happening down there?" the king inquired.
"I am not certain, my lord, but I will find out," the assistant replied.
The assistant descended to the marketplace and, after an hour, returned.
"My lord, a merchant is selling horses."
"How many horses does he have?" the king asked.
"I did not inquire, but I will find out," the assistant responded, hurrying back to the marketplace.
Another hour passed before he returned.
"He has 500 horses," the assistant reported.
"What colors are the horses?" the king questioned further.
"I did not ask, but I will find out," the assistant said, once more making his way to the marketplace.
This pattern continued throughout the day, with the assistant shuttling back and forth, each time gathering only the specific information requested.

By evening, the king, realizing the inefficiency, decided to involve his prime minister, Agenta.
Agenta went to the marketplace and returned within two hours.
"My lord, the merchant, Rashid from Kabul, is renowned for his quality steeds."
"He has 500 horses: 300 white, 100 black, and 100 gray."
"Our army currently maintains 2,500 horses and requires an additional 350 to be at full strength."
"I have negotiated the purchase of 350 horses at 1,250 dinars each."
"Additionally, Rashid wishes to gift three exceptional horses to you as a token of respect."
"With your approval, we can proceed with the transaction."
The personal assistant listened attentively, realizing that while he had executed each task as directed, he lacked the initiative and comprehensive understanding that Agenta demonstrated.
Moral of the Story:
In this tale, the personal assistant represents Robotic Process Automation (RPA)—efficient at performing specific, rule-based tasks but limited to the exact instructions given, unable to adapt or anticipate beyond its programming.
In contrast, the prime minister embodies Agentic AI—capable of understanding context, learning from data, making informed decisions, and handling complex, unstructured situations with adaptability and foresight.
This story illustrates the fundamental differences between RPA and Agentic AI:
Understanding these distinctions is crucial for organizations aiming to enhance efficiency and decision-making through automation technologies.
Interesting intersection of AI and automation. How do you see this evolving in the coming years?
