The difference between Personal and Professional Development (and why you need both)

The difference between Personal and Professional Development (and why you need both)

Have you ever noticed how the words "personal development" and "professional development" get used interchangeably?

Well, I think it's important to think about what each one means - because professional development without personal development is a detractor from authenticity...and personal development without professional development is creativity unrealized.

Before I go deeper on this, here's a quick overview of each:

Personal Development is about self-growth, aiming to improve one's quality of life, mindset, and well-being. It includes areas like emotional intelligence, resilience, self-awareness, and habits that lead to a fulfilling life.

Goals are set intrinsically (based on self-awareness of what you want), and success is measured by personal satisfaction.

Professional Development centers on career skills and knowledge that enhance performance in one's job. This might involve leadership skills, technical expertise, strategic thinking, or industry-specific knowledge.

Goals are typically set extrinsically based on what you feel you need to hit KPIs or other data-based success measures.

Personal development can help you build a strong foundation for self-growth, while professional development often builds upon that foundation to support career aspirations and job performance.

If you're only focusing on PROFESSIONAL Development, then here are examples of what life may look like for you:

  • You chase recognition, acknowledgment, and promotions, but you feel misaligned or burnt out
  • Your daily to-do list is based on tasks that will meet KPIs, which feels like you're running yourself like a machine instead of feeling a sense of flow that matches your energy levels
  • You find yourself caught up in busy work but often find yourself wondering..."What's the point?"
  • You notice progress in your communication, presentation skills, negotiation style and any other soft skills development, but you feel a lack of purpose or connection to the progress that emerges

If you're only focusing on PERSONAL Development, then here are examples of what life may look like for you:

  • You have a strong drive to share a passion or idea but your communication is falling flat, making it difficult to create buy in
  • You want to create meaning and make a difference but you're nervous about networking
  • You are clear on what you need for self-care, but you have difficulty finding balance in a work-scenario, leaving you with a pattern of all or nothing (like shutting off and recharging over the weekend, then working like crazy during the week)

Personal development is what fuels professional development. Without it, you'll feel like you're missing the essence of yourself (authenticity) in your professional life.

But, you also need to develop professional skills to ensure your authenticity is shining through and making a difference where it counts.

Here's what your life could look like when you are working on both PERSONAL and PROFESSIONAL development:

  • You have clarity on what motivates you and can align that with the a company's mission or the project's vision that you're working on, which helps you feel good about the tasks you do (no matter how mundane - because they're all leading to some bigger purpose)
  • You are clear on what kind of corporate environment will be a good fit for you and proactively look for opportunities that would be in the right alignment
  • You feel comfortable prioritizing self-care needs so that you can feel fully present at work

The key word here is "alignment" - you feel a sense of inner connection to the work you are doing, and this balance feeds each other in a positive way.

There are a variety of ways to focus on both your personal and professional development, be it engaging with a coach, participating in continuing education, or being active in a network of peers.

As long as you're creating time and for your own evolution, that feeling of alignment should come into focus for you.
