DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ISOLATED AND NON-ISOLATED DRIVERS

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ISOLATED AND NON-ISOLATED DRIVERS

The best way to introduce the?various types of LED drivers?would be to consider two questions:

  1. What are LED drivers used for?
  2. How do LED drivers work?

?

Lightronics’s rapidly expanding lines of LED drivers provide reliable, energy-efficient, versatile, and convenient LED solutions for virtually any situation.

?

WHAT IS AN LED DRIVER?

An LED driver is an electrical component/power supply that is to an LED module. Driver is the name usually referred to the power supply component for LED lighting systems that, together with LED modules, comprises an LED Light Engine.

?

These LED drivers supply power to LED modules for optimal light output in different applications and different intensities, with different currents and using different dimming protocols.

ISOLATED LED DRIVER:

In an isolated LED driver, the Input and the Output are separated by power transformer, which provides galvanic isolation. AC voltage is transformed by the isolated power supply to the lower voltage by means of an isolation transformer. The primary and secondary coils of transformer are not connected by a wire or a track. This network topology can surpass high voltage test. In an Isolated LED Driver, the disturbance on primary side of the circuit is not directly passed onto output side. So, the output gets some degree of protection against transients and surges occurring on the primary side.

However, this configuration is high on cost. These Isolated LED Drivers are suitable for indoor lighting such as living room, bedroom, and lighting corridors.

?

NON-ISOLATED LED DRIVER

A non-isolated LED driver does not have a power transformer. Non-isolated means the output terminal and the input terminal are electrical connected, directly.

The lack of transformer isolation in non-isolated circuitry, means that the LEDs are more vulnerable to damage by flow coming from the AC mains as a result of load switching transients or disturbance on primary side.

As a result, flow protection components are needed on both the AC and DC sides to provide adequate flow immunity effectively.

Non-isolated LED driver is high on power efficiency as compared to isolated LED driver as the transformer losses are avoided.

To sum it up, isolated or non-isolated LED driver have their own sets of advantages and disadvantages. Based on the functional and safety requirements you can make a choice. Lightronics LED provides both types of solution – isolated LED Drivers and Non-Isolated LED Drivers - to meet our customer needs.

As with all of Lightronics LED’s products, our LED driver program is built on the promises of high quality.
