The Difference Between GPT 4o and GPT 4.5

A Senior IT architect, now considered retired. I remain a proponent for AI literacy and the safe and ethical adoption of AI. I write regularly on Linked In and Medium (Dennis Layton).
The difference between the newly released GPT4o model and the newly released GPT 4.5 model is obvious as soon as you start working with it. Given the same prompt in each of the following examples, which response would you choose? It's subjective and qualitative, but I would suggest that 4.5's output would require less post edit work than 4o's.

Create a summary of the battle on the Plains of Abraham and its significance.
GPT 4o
The Battle of the Plains of Abraham, fought on September 13, 1759, was a pivotal engagement in the Seven Years' War (known in North America as the French and Indian War). It took place just outside the walls of Quebec City, Canada, and involved British forces under General James Wolfe and French troops commanded by the Marquis de Montcalm.
This battle is significant for several reasons:
1. Decisive British Victory: The British troops, although slightly outnumbered, managed to surprise the French by scaling the cliffs overnight and assembling on the Plains of Abraham by morning. The ensuing battle was swift, lasting only about 15 minutes. Wolfe's forces were able to break the French lines, leading to a complete British victory.
2. Death of Commanders: Both commanding generals, Wolfe and Montcalm, were mortally wounded during the battle. Wolfe died on the battlefield, while Montcalm succumbed to his injuries the next day. Their deaths added a dramatic and poignant element to the battle's narrative.
3. Fall of Quebec: The British victory led to the fall of Quebec City to British forces. This was a major blow to French control in North America and marked a turning point in the Seven Years' War. Quebec's capture significantly diminished French influence and was a critical step toward British domination of Canada.
4. Impact on the Seven Years' War: The battle contributed to the eventual British success in the Seven Years' War, culminating in the Treaty of Paris in 1763. As a result of the treaty, France ceded most of its North American territories to Britain, significantly reshaping the continent's political landscape.
5. Legacy: The battle has cultural and historical significance in Canadian history. It is often seen as a defining moment that laid the groundwork for the later creation of Canada as a nation under British influence, and it continues to be a subject of study and commemoration in both Canadian and military history.
Overall, the Battle of the Plains of Abraham was a crucial event that not only decided the fate of Quebec but also had far-reaching consequences for the geopolitical landscape of North America.
GPT 4.5
The Battle of the Plains of Abraham took place on September 13, 1759, during the Seven Years' War (1756–1763). It was fought between the British forces led by General James Wolfe and French forces under General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm near Quebec City. The brief but decisive battle resulted in a British victory, with both Wolfe and Montcalm fatally wounded.
Its significance lies in the fact that this victory led to the British capture and control of Quebec, a critical French stronghold in North America. The battle's outcome paved the way for British dominance in Canada and contributed greatly to the eventual end of French colonial rule in North America. The victory was formalized with the Treaty of Paris (1763), which resulted in the transfer of French North American colonial territories to Britain. Consequently, the Battle of the Plains of Abraham is widely recognized as a turning point in Canadian history, shaping Canada's cultural, linguistic, and political future.

Write a non-rhyming poem about the plight of homeless in a city during the winter
GPT 4o
Streets whisper tales of forgotten paths,
as the sky wraps itself in a cloak of gray.
The city inhales the cold, exhaling light,
each breath a sigh echoing in alleyways.
The corners hold their silent witnesses,
figures huddled beneath the burden of the night.
Cardboard crowns on weary heads,
they are invisible monarchs of this concrete kingdom.
Wind sharpens its touch on cracked, ungloved hands,
beneath newspaper blankets, hope flickers dim.
Footsteps rush past, fleeting shadows of warmth,
leaving behind a wake of indifference.
In the glow of neon promises,
doors remain locked, windows are eyes turned away—
a city dances in ignorance,
blind to the symphony of shivers in doorways.
Yet, every breath is a testament,
a defiant blaze in the heart of winter's shadow.
Silent stories etched in frost,
they persist with the resilience of forgotten dreams.
In nights that stretch longer than memory,
dawn is a persistent whisper of possibility.
Even here, beneath the chill’s insistence,
there are seeds of hope hidden beneath the snow.
GPT 4.5
Beneath streetlights that glare cold,
figures huddle in shadows,
wrapped in whispers of forgotten warmth,
their breath silvered by frost.
Concrete beds offer bitter welcome,
cardboard palaces crumble beneath damp snow—
hands tremble, seeking faint heat,
cupped around watery cups of charity.
Faces etched by hardship,
silent outlines of quiet suffering,
passed by hurried footsteps and lowered gazes,
their humanity blurred, made invisible.
At doorways aglow with holiday cheer,
hope flickers briefly,
but warmth is an unattainable dream,
just behind frosted windows' curtains.
Night crawls onward, relentless,
city arteries flow indifferent,
while beneath weary skies,
the unhoused endure another bitter vigil,
seeking sanctuary—the impossible wish
as fingertips numb, thoughts fading
in winter’s unforgiving embrace.
Summary
If you are looking for an AI model to do coding, answer difficult math or science problems you are still going to use a reasoning model like o1 or o3-mini, but for anything else all you need is a non-reasoning model like 4o or 4.5.
At the time of writing GPT 4.5 was not yet available to anyone except Pro subscribers or through an API. I generated the examples in this article using the API.
The cost at this time is astronomical by comparison. Using 4o costs $2.50 per million input tokens, using 4.5 at this time will set you back $75.00 per million input tokens.
