The Difference Between Energy and Passion On Stage
“Are you ready!? Let me HEAR YOU!!!”
We’ve all seen this before… the speaker who bursts onto the stage, arms flailing, voice booming, trying to pump up the crowd. And what happens?
:: polite applause ::
:: a few pity yells ::
:: one guy tries that loud whistle thing (which hurts everyone’s ears) ::
Recently, a premium subscriber asked me about the difference between energy and passion on stage. They wanted to know what it takes to convey passion without running around like a lunatic. (Which I've been known to do.)
I SO appreciate this question, and lucky for you, I’ve got the perfect person to answer this: Michael Port !
Michael, co-author of The Referable Speaker and founder of HEROIC, ( Heroic Public Speaking ) knows a thing or two about commanding the stage.
Here’s what he had to say in part one of our two-part series:
? The Fake Energy Entrance: It falls flat because it’s missing one thing… honesty. Asking your audience to feel something they don’t isn’t going to work.
?? Honesty + Passion = Real Energy: True energy isn’t about you—it’s about the experience you create for the audience. First, change how they feel. The thinking, and eventually the actions, will follow.

2 个月Andrew Davis, I love Michael Port's advice: Honesty + Passion = Real Energy: True energy isn’t about you—it’s about the experience you create for the audience. First, change how they feel. The thinking, and eventually the actions, will follow. It's really about creating a remarkable experience for your audience. That means you have to know what lights them up and what shuts them down.

2 个月This is very validating, Andrew Davis, because I think people think about the "fake energy entrance" when they say they want an "energetic" speaker. That energy is coming from trying too hard. On the flip-side, when authenticity + passion (what I would deem "conviction") come together, then people experience a magnetizing energy from the speaker on stage. THAT is the kind of energy that changes people instead of annoying them. Based on the feedback I get from audiences, I'm an honesty + passion speaker, and that is why people say things like, "thought-provoking", "eye-opening", "a wake-up call", "catalytic", and "transformative" in the feedback they share with me. Those are words that tell me they felt what I wanted them to feel!
