Dieting Linked to Risky Behaviors in Teen Girls

An examination of data regarding more than 3,300 female high school students revealed that those who dieted were 50% more likely to skip breakfast, smoke, and/or binge drink. Research leader Dr. Amanda Raffoul writes, “The link between dieting and other health-compromising behaviors is worrisome since 70 percent of girls reported dieting at some point over the three years… Post-puberty changes often lead to weight gain among girls and there is incredible pressure from social media and elsewhere to obtain and maintain the ideal body.” Canadian Journal of Public Health, March 2018
