Diesel vehicles are now being powered by vegetable oil

National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) is now powering some of its non-electric vehicles with Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), following a trial in Lincolnshire, UK.

The trial uses HVO as a conventional diesel drop-in replacement and the results have shown an 89% reduction in CO2 emissions.

Why vegetable oil?

HVO fuel is a fossil-free alternative to diesel, derived from used cooking oils, tallows and other recyclable waste.

HVO is now used in over 100 vehicles in the county, with an average monthly mileage of 1100. This means that as our local linespersons, engineers and technicians fix faults, restore power and undertake maintenance, the vehicles they’re driving are powered by a cleaner, greener fuel.

Trials like this are demonstrating the important role HVO could play in decarbonising fleet – especially where engineering advancements in electric vehicles have not yet arrived, such as for Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs).

Why do we still have some non-electric vehicles in our fleets?

While we’re taking huge strides in adding fully electric vehicles to all our fleets, there are some vehicle types where electric alternatives are simply not yet available, such as HGVs like the Mercedes Unimogs in our fleet.

HVO acts as an important stopgap to help meet decarbonisation goals and reduce carbon emissions while suitable EV alternatives are not yet available.

Christopher Mayell, Transport Manager at National Grid Electricity Distribution, said: “As the country’s largest distribution network operator, we have one of the largest fleets in the UK and we’re working tirelessly to deliver more electric vehicles each year where suitable alternatives exist.

“Of course, there are some vehicles where electric alternatives are simply not yet available, but our ambition is to be an industry leader in fleet decarbonisation.”

Decarbonising our fleets for a cleaner future

When combined with the 1,000 electric vehicles – including 400 commercial vans and 600 cars already in operation across the communities that NGED serves – HVO helps improve air quality and drastically reduces our impact on the environment.

The NGED fleet has also recently welcomed a set of new fully electric 4x4 utility vehicles following a collaborative project with car manufacturer Skoda, whereby 70 Skoda Enyaqs were converted into light commercial vehicles with all-terrain capability.

This is what folks did years ago when it was 20p a litre then they cottoned on and now put veg oil up to around £1 a litre.

That’s good. I learnt about HVO recently when I visited the Tyseley Energy Park in Birmingham where HVO is used
