AI is being increasingly used for storage management tasks such as storage provisioning, capacity planning, and data protection, including failure predictions and workload migration. This trend is expected to continue in 2024, with storage vendors introducing more AI-powered features, some of which may become standard across the industry.

·?????? Enhanced Ransomware Protection

As ransomware remains a significant threat, storage vendors are employing AI and machine learning to enhance ransomware protection. This includes monitoring for known ransomware behaviors and anomalous activity, stopping attacks, and automatically restoring data from known good copies. The trend for 2024 is toward embedding ransomware recoveries into storage and arrays within data centers, thus enabling rapid recovery from attacks.

·?????? Changes in Cloud Storage Usage and On-Premise Storage-as-a-Service (StaaS):

There is a shift in how companies use cloud storage, with some repatriating data due to cost, compliance mandates, or performance issues. Despite this, the StaaS market continues to grow, offering geographical flexibility for remote users. On-premise StaaS is also emerging, providing a pay-as-you-go model that shifts from capital expense to operating expense, with vendors managing infrastructure based on a spectrum of capabilities.

AI Advancements:

·?????? Generative AI's Second Wave in Video:

Following the success of photorealistic image generation, the focus is now shifting to text-to-video. This involves training models to create short video clips, improving in quality rapidly. Expect significant advancements in this area, impacting filmmaking, marketing, and training purposes. Notable applications include deepfake technology for various uses, ranging from creative to controversial.

·?????? Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG):

This technique is emerging to tackle the issue of AI "hallucinations" - generating plausible but incorrect responses. RAG combines text generation with information retrieval, enhancing the accuracy of AI-generated content. It allows Large Language Models (LLMs) to access external information for more accurate and contextually aware responses, with significant implications for enterprise AI adoption.

·?????? Customized Enterprise Generative AI Models:

There is a growing trend towards developing smaller, niche-specific AI models tailored to specific business use cases. These customized models offer a more targeted approach than massive, general-purpose tools, addressing specific needs in sectors like healthcare, finance, and legal. They are often built by modifying existing AI models and are seen as more cost-effective and efficient.

·?????? Shift in White Collar Work:

AI adoption by companies is expected to deliver productivity benefits and change the nature of knowledge work. It will augment and extend the capabilities of professionals in creative fields, law, finance, and academia. The focus is on enhancing rather than automating jobs.

Near Future: 12-Month Outlook

·?????? Increased Emphasis on AI Ethics and Regulation:

Over the next 12-24 months, there will likely be a heightened focus on the ethical implications and regulatory aspects of AI. This includes addressing biases in AI systems, ensuring data privacy, and setting up guidelines for responsible AI use. Policymakers are expected to introduce more comprehensive regulations governing AI technologies, as seen with the European Union's recent AI legislation and the U.S. government's executive orders on AI. Companies will need to adapt to these changes by focusing on ethical AI development and compliance with new regulations.

·?????? Advancements in AI-Powered Healthcare:

Another key trend in the near future is the advancement of AI applications in healthcare. This includes improved diagnostic tools, personalized medicine, and more efficient healthcare management systems. AI's ability to analyze large datasets will enable better patient care, early disease detection, and more targeted treatments. The integration of AI in healthcare is also expected to streamline administrative processes, leading to cost savings and improved patient experiences.

·?????? The Rise of AI in Cybersecurity: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being integrated into cybersecurity, analyzing vast data amounts to detect threats often missed by humans. While AI automates repetitive tasks and offers predictive insights, it also introduces the risk of systems being exploited by malicious actors. The trend in 2024 will be towards a balanced approach in embracing AI, considering both its advantages and inherent risks. This includes equipping employees with the necessary skills to safely utilize AI technology in cybersecurity

Introduction to the NZISM

The New Zealand Information Security Manual (NZISM) is the New Zealand Government's security compliance handbook. It contains both a risk management framework and a number of security controls that NZ government agencies are required to have and that many NZ organisations are encouraged to have.? This NZISM fundamentals course highlights the most significant areas of the NZISM. In particular, this course emphasizes the fundamental requirements from the first 5 chapters of the NZISM that includes reporting requirements, risk management and the key roles required to meet the needs of the NZISM. In addition, the second half of the course delves into more detail about the most common area of the NZISM that organization struggle to match including cryptography requirements, documentation, the system auditing process and organizational security. Dr Eldridge will also compare the NZISM requirements with international standards (such as ISO27002), and discuss prioritising different controls to improve an organisation's security posture.
