Generation Alpha children are born to smartphone and video

Didacta: learning and video

At Didacta Koln next week I’m meeting our European partners in Education publishing, for conversations with old and new friends, about video in the learning experience.?

Some things on our mind today about video and learning:

  1. Generation Alpha - (the ones born with an always-on smartphone in the cradle) - has different video tastes from Generation Z. The alpha cohort, today aged 0 to about 16, uses video as the default mode for getting information. Good content is short, single-focus, wastes no time - yet has a lot of style. See an example of what we think Gen Alpha's video diet in education might look like here.
  2. Awareness of the twin crises of mental health and climate/ecology collapse are baked-in to young people’s minds. If you're ignoring those issues, you’re not relevant.?
  3. Video is about to go unimaginable places with AI. Check out today’s release of Open AI’s Sora video generation engine which gets a sneak preview by video creator Marques Brownlee here. Video cost, quality and production parameters just went “phut”.

Our view is that well produced authentic and relatable contributors and stories will become even more essential for good education video. We’ve built a huge catalogue of them and over 60m learners worldwide use our video content. Or just reach out if you want to talk about it, we are ready to help.

Couldn't agree more, Stephen. I'll be there too and happy to share some of our experiences with all the AI beta testing we've been running over the past year and the up-skilling our team our team has enjoyed as a result. Marry the production values of experience with AI as a tool and you've some pretty powerful learning assets at scale. Safe flight - drop me a text and we'll grab a beer!
