Did You Miss These Great Posts?

3 Ways Using Jargon Blocks the Crowd's View of Your Personality

Audiences today want speakers to be authentic. Over-relying on jargon can discredit you in their eyes - it throws up a roadblock that keeps them from learning more about you.

Your presentation will fall flat unless you serve to use language that fits the audience’s ...

1. Educational background (general vocabulary)

2. Demographic information (words they like to use)

3. Life experience (personal stories that shape language)

Generally, if you can say something in plain English, do it.

Remember, not all groups in your field may use the same jargon – and not all individuals in the field may relate to extensive use of esoteric words, when plain words will suffice.

However, if you do use jargon ... explain it!

That allows you to gain whatever advantages it offers, while still maintaining your audience’s understanding.

Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way

It’s never too late to improve as a speaker - and to get the results you want by unleashing the power of your voice.

A sales associate admitted to me that she regretted not dealing with her fear of public speaking earlier in her career.

Here’s some of the things we did:

-Practiced impromptu speaking with her before and during every meeting

-Role-played her discussions with higher ups who brought out her self-doubt

Find out what else we did by clicking the picture below.

Great article Michael! I couldn't agree more. Customizing or better said, personalizing your speech to match the tone, culture, and needs of your audience. It is critical to spark a listening and engagement experience.
