World Trenchless Day is September 24, 2020

Trenchless technology, often referred to as no-dig construction, is an alternative and complement to traditional open-cut construction methods. Some of the major benefits of trenchless technology include:

  • Environmentally Friendly – Using specialized equipment underground infrastructure is installed, repaired or replaced with minimal ecological disturbance. Infrastructure can be installed under buildings, under forests, under wetlands and bodies of water.
  • Minimal Disturbance to Surroundings – No one likes their home, business or morning commute to be affected by construction. The footprint for a trenchless construction zone is smaller and often times done in an existing right of way.
  • Decreased Rehabilitation Time – Because trenchless construction methods require little digging, the time to rehabilitate the work area to as-found or better condition is decreased.
  • Saves Time – With decreased disturbance, projects using trenchless methods take less time to complete. Less time means less inconvenience associated with a construction project.
  • Saves Money – Because projects can be completed in less time – including prep and restoration – with decreased disturbance, projects that incorporate trenchless save money.

WHAT IS TRENCHLESS TECHNOLOGY?

Trenchless technology refers to the “no-dig” construction and/or rehabilitation processes, courtesy of the NASTT website:

Trenchless construction includes such new construction methods as tunneling, microtunneling, horizontal directional drilling, pipe ramming, pipe jacking, auger boring and other methods for the installation of pipelines and cables below the ground with minimal excavation.

On the rehabilitation side, Trenchless rehabilitation includes such construction methods as sliplining, thermoformed pipe, pipe bursting, cured-in-place pipe (CIPP), grout-in-place pipe, mechanical spot repair, and other methods for the repair, rehabilitation, or replacement of existing buried pipes and structures without excavation, or at least with minimal excavation.

World Trenchless Day is a day of global celebration (commemorated on the fourth Thursday of September each year) that shines a spotlight on all of trenchless technology’s benefits — safety, economics, environmental, social. www.worldtrenchlessday.org

World Trenchless Day unites the entire trenchless industry — manufacturers, contractors, engineering firms, associations, public works and publications — to share the world of trenchless technology, reaching out to those who have not yet realized the impact that trenchless methods have on their communities.

The impact that the use of trenchless methods has on communities, the economy and quality of life is immense and will only continue to grow as municipalities and utilities realize and understand their benefits vs. traditional methods.

We have always known that trenchless technology will play a huge role in addressing these needs. Join us on World Trenchless Day in raising awareness of trenchless technology methods.

We can’t wait! www.worldtrenchlessday.org

HOST A WORLD TRENCHLESS DAY PARTY OR NETWORKING EVENT

If you’re a manufacturer, contractor or engineering firm, gather your co-workers, invite your customers, invite your neighbors and plan a get together. Schools or professional associations can plan a lunch-and-learn event or after hours networking event. The choice is yours. Have fun and spread the good word about trenchless technologies.

HOST A SITE VISIT OR OPEN HOUSE

Maybe a party isn’t your cup of tea. Why not host a facility open house or project site visit. Invite your local elected officials and policy-makers and let them get an up close and personal look at what trenchless is all about.

RELEASE A RESEARCH PAPER OR REPORT

World Trenchless Day focuses on educating people about trenchless technology and its benefits. What better way than releasing a report or paper focused on a trenchless topic?

WRITE AN OP-ED

As an industry, we know the state of the world’s underground infrastructure or, in some places, the lack thereof. Write to your local newspaper, explain the situation, the need for funding and how trenchless technology play a pivotal role in the work that needs to be done.

ENGAGE THE NEXT GENERATION

Schools across the globe push the importance of science technology, engineering and math (STEM). Visit a high school, career-tech center or university and discuss how each of the components fit with the trenchless industry.

PARTICIPATE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media is ubiquitous today and it’s a fun and easy way to spread the word about trenchless. When posting your World Trenchless Day news and photos, use the hashtag: #WorldTrenchlessDay. We’ll be sure to share your post and spread the news.

BE CREATIVE

You’re not limited to this list. The goal of World Trenchless Day is to get everyone in the industry involved and engaged in spreading the word. If you come up with something truly innovative, share it with your peers.
