Did you know ... somewhere, Family Day is a statutory holiday?

Did you know that the whole of Canada (except for British Columbia) observes a statutory Family Day in February? Are there others, I wonder.

Sometime, overlooked management good practice. To me, Family Day is also important for our extended family - the organisation we worked for. It is a very important corporate "tool" for team-building and a release from the daily routine. It also gives the opportunity for the Club committee members to develop organisational, budgetary, public relations and other skills.

Social hand-shake. That's why we decided to have MIGHT's Family Day, annually if possible. As the President & CEO of MIGHT, this gives me the opportunity to share "un-official" time with associates that I don't work directly with, get-to-know their spouse and children, and having fun under the sun.

MIGHT Family Day 2015 took the theme "MIGHT at the Movies". An excellent theme it was. For 3 days, we had an excellent and exciting out-of-the-office family time. Innocent fun in the sun and became toon under the moon.

Engaging the top leadership. The presence of our Joint-Chairmen and Board members added colour and glamour to the Family Day. Tan Sri Zakri anchored the ‘Chat’ session with the staff; sharing his vast experience and words of wisdom. Tan Sri responded wittingly to both personal and general questions that gather constant laughter from the audience. It was indeed a rare opportunity for our staff to put the Science Advisor to the Prime Minister on the spot.

Thematic. Tan Sri Tajudin and Tan Sri Tee Hock Seng (who brought boxes of Mandarin orange) with their families joined the Gala Dinner. Both of them were very sporting and Tan Sri Tajudin even sang part of a song to everyone’s delight. As the dinner came with a theme “MIGHT at the Movies”, the staff and family came dressed in costumes of their favourites movie character.

On that very night, “We all became STARS under one banner – MIGHT’s Family”

Fun yet effective team building activities. Other key Family Day activities are:

  • Appreciation for long-serving staff
  • Tele-match
  • Karaoke competition
  • Stage performance by staff
  • Visiting tables during breakfast and lunch

Cost-benefit analysis. And the family bond is strengthen and relations made closer. For all of us is a part of that big family called MIGHT. It is instant ROI and more.

In nowdays is important for kids to learn about family in a wider spectrum, for reason that many children are growing up with single mum or dad and feel sad by such official holidays. I could reach some positive effects with talk sessions asking kids about people who care about them, who is playing with them, who is listening, walking, talking, buying gifts, food, clothes, whom they mostly like ... This way they all could share number of experiences and people around them. ′Including such talks and dialogues into preparations for diverse celebrations which are related to Family, teacher will include various ways of life together and family tribes into this intimate and emotional topic.
